I am struggling to find the medal card for one of the men from my war memorial project, can anyone help please?
His name is John J Hall Pte M/21611 ASC, the SDGW on Ancestry has his number as being M2/21611 RASC, but I can't find him using either number.

Many thanks

Lynn, there are 7 medal cards on the National Archives site for John J Hall, Army Service Corps, but none of the numbers match yours :(

There's two for the ASC.

Edit: yes there's a lot more I'm not paying attention sorry.

Lynn, have you found him on the CWGC site? I can't see him on there.

What does the CWGC site say? Where did he die?

It is unlikely, but possible that he was killed in this country before serving overseas.

This is the CWGC link http://www.cwgc.org/search/casualty_details.aspx?casualty=412175

Well, it is possible that he didn't serve overseas. My grandfather was in the army - from 1913 onwards, but didn't go abroad, so no war medals.

That could be the case then, as he is listed as being at a depot. He is buried in the local cemetery, but I haven't managed to find his grave yet. :(

So his number is 281611 on the CWGC site. I'll have another try now we have that number, but it could well be as Phoenix said, he didn't serve overseas so there was no medal.

No, still can't see a card for him.

Thanks Kate, it looks as though there is no card for him then. :)

I know what Phoenix meant but this can be read as he died then served overseas.

Sorry I can't add anything helpful to the thread.

I can see what you mean Toni :)

Now that all the surviving service records are online, you can search by village, to see (amongst the surviving records) who joined up with them.

Which is typical as my month's membership ran out yesterday!

Well, I haven't a sub, but I could still get the surnames & xtian names of the young men my grandfather might have known.

I did try putting in the village name & some names were brought up, but it is hard to tell if they were a correct match as so much is hidden

Erm, no, that's brilliant! :) Would there be any chance that you could email me a copy please?

Yes PM me your email address. It will be a page at a time though.

It doesn't say much gives his wife's name as Harriet oh and a child William Henry. *correction later*

Edit to say: There's 16 pages and yes there is a lot of detail some of it bad condition though - sorry I didn't mean I'll email a page at a time but each page will be in one document ...

I think it'll give you the answer why he hasn't got a medal roll listed. Its probably as some people have said he didn't serve in a theatre of war.
