This time I'm looking at the will for George Gawthorp from Hemswell.
I'm descended from his daughter Sarah who married John Wood.
Most of it is pretty straightforward.
He leaves property to his wife Sarah.
He names Sarah Wood his daughter who is to inherit the same property after her mother's death.
He names his grandsons - Sarah's two sons - George and Gawthrop Wood.
He names "John Wood and his wife" - i.e. John and Sarah Wood, his son-in-law and daughter.
He specifies "To my son Wood four Childer ten shillings a piece" - ie. his grandchildren.
THEN:
"Item I give unto John Toyn and his wife ten shillings a piece.
Item I give unto my son John Toyn four Childer ten shillings a piece."
This is a mystery.
I have one other child for George and Sarah Gawthorp - Elizabeth christened in 1680 at Upton cum Nexby.
I can't find a marriage for John Toyn to Elizabeth Gawthorp.
I have found a marriage between John Toyne and Elizabeth Tailor in Upton in 1708 (FMP).
To make it more interesting, TOYNE was the maiden name of George's wife - Sarah Toyne.
So is this John Toyne a son-in-law or some relation of his wife? I have no record of her marrying before, but I suppose it is always possible.
