View Full Version : Tracing Cecil back from 1911
Update at post #17 after certs arrived
I've found another possible branch of the Goulson family but the 1911 return doesn't help much with some of the relationships, I'm interested in the household members in general but Cecil has caught my eye for some reason.
1911 details;
Cecil Goulson abt 1899, Nephew
Birth Place: Hough, Lincolnshire, England
Births Dec 1897
Goulson Cecil Grantham 7a 482
Presumably a death record for him too;
Deaths Jun 1963
GOULSON CECIL 65 GRANTHAM 3B 72
Any help appreciated, I think the George mentioned in 1911 is born Syston despite the indexed pob.

On the 1901 census he is at Hough on the Hill, Lincolnshire, age 3, born Gilston, son of Hannah Goulson age 33 born Gipple(?), Lincs. Hannah is a widow.
I think this is the marriage for Hannah
Marriages Jun 1896 (>99%)
Goulson John Grantham 7a 1070
Toulson Hannah Grantham 7a 1070
And death of hubby?
Deaths Jun 1897
Goulson John 60 Newark 7b 247
Just a bit put off by the age given on that death record.

I was just going to suggest the same marriage.

The John Goulson who died in 1897 is on the National Probate Calendar - of Hougham Lincs, market gardener, died 24 Apr 1897, probate London 8 Jun to John Goulson watchmaker and Joseph Goulson and Walter Goulson market gardeners. So I'm guessing Hannah was a second wife, if this is the right John.
Aha

Only query I have from the 1911 is as follows;
Head of house is Joseph abt 1862, there is an Alice listed as mother of the head, I don't have Alice as mother to Joseph though. :confused:
I should think the Joseph and Alice in 1911 are these people in 1881:

I'm running without a sub atm Merry so can't see the result.
That's why I gave you the 1881 as I presumed you could look at it somewhere....Here's one version
https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/XQMP-Q13
Ah, total foul up on ancestry then for the 1911
Joseph Goulson 49
Alice Goulson 83
Hannah Goulson 42
Cecil Goulson 12
George Goulson 44
I hadn't noticed the T surnames were mistranscribed as I only searched for Cecil! The writing is quite clear. The relationships are correct though; Hannah and George are the sister and brother of Joseph and Alice is their mother. (George isn't at home in 1881 - he's a servant in another household in Syston)
Well I think it has answered a query to a cert I had, one for a death of a Mary Goulson, widow of "unknown at this present time", it looks like she may have been the wife prior to Hannah.
Found Cecil in a tree on GR, tree owner is a David Toulosn which all ties in rather nicely, wonder if he has any other names or if it's a branch he has based on census etc.
Uodate to the thread,
ordered three certs today (first ones for a long time);
GRO
1896 marriage of John to Hannah
1897 death of John
Lincs Registrars
Birth cert for Cecil
Hopefully all three should tie in together and confirm the suspicions.
Update after the certs arrived, wanted to share confirmation of the result;
John Goulson death 4th April 1897, Gelston Hough RD. Aged 60, Occ Market Gardener
Cecil Goulson birth 24th October 1897 in Gelston Hough RD. Son of John Goulson, Market Gardener, deceased and Hannah Goulson, formerly Toulson. Informant was Ann Toulson, present at the birth.
