My 3x G grandmother, Ann Hooper, was married to John Thompson on 26 December 1830 at St James, Trowbridge, Wiltshire. They had at least 7 children, all born/baptised in Trowbridge. Sarah (1830), John (1831), James (1830), Ann (1835), Elizabeth (1838), Joseph (1845) and my 2x G grandmother Clara in 1849.

John died in Q4 in 1848 in Trowbridge, but I don't have his death certificate and I haven't yet found his burial, nor can I find him on 1841 census.

In 1841 Ann is living at Courts, Trowbridge with her children Sarah, John, James, Ann & Elizabeth and with James & Sarah Hooper, who I think are her parents. HO107/1182/13

In 1851 she was at Cottles Barton, Trowbridge with children James, John, Joseph & 2 year old Clara. Also there, as lodgers, were James Burns (Barnes?),an ostler and Elizabeth Merriten(?).HO107/1840/13

In 1861 still in Trowbridge but James Barnes (ostler) is listed as 'head', with a line through the relationship to Ann Thompson, and Joseph & Clara Thompson are listed as 'son' & 'daughter'. RG9/1296/14

In 1871 James (Head) & Ann (Wife) Barnes are living at 18 Dieppe Street, Fulham in the same house as Clara and her husband Edwin (listed as Edward) & children. RG10/67/32

In 1881 James (Head) & Ann (Wife) Barnes are at 48 Waverley Road, Paddington and James is a Stableman. RG11/1/22

I cannot find a marriage for Ann & James. Do you think they moved to London to avoid people knowing they were 'living in sin' or have I just missed their marriage?

Clara married Edwin Paines in 1867 as Clara Thompson Barnes.

I've just realised I don't have Clara's birth certificate so I don't know her exact date of birth, or who is listed as her father. :(

I've just found a tree on Ancestry which shows one of Joseph Thompson's daughters as Lydia Annie Barnes Thompson! Ooh maybe John Thompson left Ann before the 1841 census (there's a gap of 7 years between the 5th & 6th children) and Joseph & Clara were James Barnes' children.;)
Another reference on this same tree shows Joseph's father as James Barnes

Any thoughts please?

I think I'll have to order Clara's BC won't I?

Edit: I thought I had the ref for Clara's birth certificate, but couldn't find it under Thompson. It's listed under 'Barnes'! Looks like I have the wrong man listed for my 4xG grandfather! ;(

Perhaps he was already dead in 1841 and the 1848 death is for someone completely different - you wouldn't know as age wouldn't be given.

Woops, child born in 1845 so that wouldn't be the case.

Elizabeth,
For ages I have wondered about John Thompson - where he was in 1841 and if that death in 1848 was correct. I thought I had the two younger children, Joseph (b 1845) & Clara (b 1849) birth refs, but couldn't find Clara. Joseph is listed as Thompson, and I was almost certain I had found Clara listed as Thompson as well. However when I looked just now I found her as Clara Barnes! I will have to send off for her BC to see who is listed as the father.

Kite,

Thank you for that marriage. Looks good - now why couldn't I find that? Maybe I should just start again with this lot! ;)

Right I'm about to order Clara's BC and the certificate for the marriage Kite found.
Thank you ladies :)
