I have an Ann, wife of THomas Merrick on 1851 census onwards, living in Stratfield Mortimer, berkshire or Mortimer West End, Hampshire (they're very close - one each side of the county border)

She is born abt 1831 Baughurst, Hampshire.

There is a possible marriage in 1850 in Reading district , Berkshire for Thomas Merrick to Ann Greenaway.

There is a possible baptism in 1831 in Baughurst which would fit nicely (parents Andrew and Rebecca) which fits perfectly with this 1841 census IF the image says Greenaway and not Ganaway as the transcription says:

I'm questioning it as I'm wondering why they went to Reading to marry when they were both in the village of Stratfield Mortimer in 1841

Thanks for looking

In nine years they could have gone to Timbucktoo and come back again

I think it could very well say Greenaway and especially since Ganaway is such an odd name. You could try searching for the name Ganaway in the next census to see if it really exists.

I'm struggling enough with all the villages called Mortimer something and Stratfield something

The same family is definitely Greenaway in 1851, and the daughter Harriet has also married a Merrick, and been widowed, in the meantime.

Have you actually got the marriage cert? Not sure how far Reading registration district extends. It's also possible they married in the register office so would have to have gone to Reading for that.

There would have been a register office (or more than one) in the registration district for the village of Stratfield Mortimer, which was Bradfield, so they wouldn't have had to go to Reading to get married if they were living in that village, but the village is very close to Reading - it's quite possible that one or both of them had moved to Reading district to get work.
