I've lost track of a rellie after 1881

Jane Elizabeth Hay b 1863 Norfolk;

Birth Ref
4b 295 Q3 1863 Docking
The 1881 census shows Jane to be a teacher, living on New Road in Wells Next the Sea.
The head of the house is her stepmother Maria, and a servant is also present in the house.

After that she just vanishes, can anyone find anything for her please? No obvious marriage or death coming up on freebmd and she isn't obvious on a post '81 census.

Thanks in advance.

I have tried, but every time I found a possible match I was able to eliminate her! lol

Might have another look later.....

Is it possible that she used her step-mother's surname of Waller? There is a record of Jane E Waller marrying in Norfolk in 1908 to either Richard Alexander Wells of William James Clark.

I've searched all variants of Jane and Hay on FMP and Ancestry - as well as names that may have resulted from a transcription error, eg, May and Kay, but nothing.

Could she have left the UK?

Got her!

1891 census for Butterworth, Lancashire

114 Dale Street

Sarah Taylor, head, draper, born Spotland, Lancashire
Jeanie Hay, 25, boarder, school teacher, born Burnham, Norfolk

Correct surname, occupation and county of birth - age OK. Jeanie is often used as a form of Jane especially if there is Scottish in the family somewhere. As her brother, Alexander Muir Hay, was born in Berwick-upon-Tweed, I think this is the correct person.

There is a marriage of Jane Elizabeth Hay to Thomas Sutcliffe or John Waddington in April-May-June 1892 in Rochdale, Lancashire.

Haven't been able to confirm which of the men she married or whether they had any children.

It's on Lancashire BMD - Jane Elizabeth Hay married John Waddington, Rochdale Register Office or Registrar Attended.

Hmm, FamilySearch has a baptism for a James Nelson Waddington 14 Jun 1893 at St John's, Longton, Staffordshire, parents John Waddington and Jane Elizabeth. Date of birth 6 May 1893.

James Nelson Waddington died as a baby, so no use looking for him on the 1901 or 1911 censuses. There is an Ina Waddington born in the same sub-district, in 1894, and I found this family in 1901 in Longton:
John Waddington Head M 36 Licensed Victualler, Rottenstall (sic) Lancashire
Jane Do Wife M 36 Scotland
Ina Do Daur S 6 Longton Staff

She was born in Norfolk, though.

In 1911 the husband says married but no wife and the dau is a servant.

I was hoping the Scotland ref might be an error and 1911 would confirm, but I can't see her at the moment. Have to cook.....

You said her brother was born in Scotland, though, Shona? So I think it will be the right Jane and she has just got in a muddle over where she was born.

Thanks everyone, just back from a nightshift so haven't been able to get back on before now.

The George Hay/Jane Watson Muir marriage was his second marriage, first was to Ann Goulson and they had 6 children born in the Berwick area, invariably those children give pob as Scotland in later census returns.

There were/are Goulson family in Lancs and sister in law to Jane went to live in Lancs post 1913, (mid 1880's to 1913 the majority of the family are in Lincoln including a Jeannie/Geannie born to the s-i-l) methinks the marriage cert will be the way to go with this one.

Did George Hay marry three times? There's a marriage to Maria Waller, too.

First time round to Ann Goulson in Grantham RD during the 1830's.

Not sure why Phoenix is mumbling, all the nice girls love a sailor and George was a mariner prior to being a coastguard

You're right, I do. And I love naval records. So much easier than army.
