View Full Version : Clean up on 2 pics please

geniebug

Could someone please clean scratches etc on these two pics.

Janet
15-09-12, 04:24
Not a lot of pixels to work with there, Jood. Can you post the originals full size out to a server, like Photobucket or Google blogger or whatever, and then insert them here using the URL of the image so someone can pick up a better repro to play with?

p.s. I like Auntie Kate!

geniebug
15-09-12, 04:41
I will try again Janet - the person who sent them to me only sent them small, and I tried photo bucket who didn't want anything to do with them. Let me have another go.

geniebug
15-09-12, 04:52
I saved them both as gif - which I'd forgotten to do before - but still am getting error messages. Is there another site I can open them in beside Photobucket?

Shouldn't you be in bed? lol

How's that?

Merry

I don't know if anyone else will come along, but if not I will have a go, as getting rid of folds and scraches is the only thing I've learned to so successfully on photobucket!! Don't know if you saw this one?

http://www.genealogistsforum.co.uk/Forum/showthread.php?t=15173

which sadly isn't my best effort.

However, it does take me a VERY, VERY LONG TIME (probably because I don't use the right methods to do the work!!) if the damage goes through an important part like their face etc, so perhaps you could tell me which one you want first! (I might run out of steam after one lol!!)

*hopes someone else gets here first* lol

I'm not in a desperate hurry Merry - soon the upoverers will be awake, so we will see what happens.

Yes, I saw the pics - they are quite good.

Merry
15-09-12, 08:23
I've just zoomed in to the last image on your list in Photoshop, but still waaay too pixilated for me to do much, sorry.

geniebug
15-09-12, 09:00
how many pixels then does one need ?

Merry
15-09-12, 09:53
it needs to be saved at at least 300dpi - 600dpi is better.

I don't know whether the fact that one one I chose is a .gif makes any difference. I'm no expert!

Rachel
15-09-12, 10:14
Better than scanning at 600, is to scan at 300 and increase the scale but you need to watch the file size doesn't get HUGE if you're emailing or submitting your pic to a website.

Can't give you an absolute scale % as each pic varies ~ but if your pics are postcard size, you could try 150% and see.

Very much out of practice at the moment haven't done any restoration for ages. Also trying to get to grips with a new program.

Haven't got time to do the other one I'm afraid.

I hope I did it right as Im not familiar with image shack.

My gt grandfather looks more neatly dressed than when the photo was cracked lol

Any ideas ?

Great job Rachel - you can see her curls now!

I think photo bucket was playing up yesterday as someone else had problems. I rather like Image Shack now that I've tried it.

One thing tho, the photo of the little girl was actually taken in the same spot - her mother on one side, her on the other - could you match (sort of) - the backgrounds, so they are clearer (on the little girl)

I had forgotten an army photo - which is here. (bit of a mess)

Not sure what you mean about matching the background so I'll leave that for someone else ~ also the final pic. doesn't really take my fancy
I'm quite picky these days and think this was my first restore for about a year (apologies).

Larger file sizes would produce better results. Your scans are pixellated because of the file sizes

Photobucket is working now so here's the pic you want restoring ~ your link does not appear to work

What I meant Rachel, was that the lady in white and the little girl had their photos taken at the same place. She had hers taken on the left side, and the little girl on the right. Note the vase in the middle. Its the same one. I just thought it was a bit dark behind the little girl, that's all.

I'll try Photo bucket for the other pic. Maybe someone else will have a go. Thanks anyway - you did a great job.

Is that big enough?

Rachel
16-09-12, 07:03
Is that big enough?

It's the scanning which alters the amount of pixellation.

You need to scan at a higher resolution

This is scanned at 200 and just enlarging it does absolutely nothing.

We enlarge and zoom in when we restore.

200 is not bad but could be better

geniebug
16-09-12, 07:06
Ufortunately I didn't scan it - the pic was sent to me like that :(

I understand what's required now (after geniebug's later post) but sorry, that's too difficult for me!

I had a little go with your unknown soldier, but couldn't do much with his face because of the pixilation.

Merry

lol!! We have a bayonet as a poker for our fire and it makes me feel a bit strange poking the coal with it - has it ever been used for a more deadly purpose?

There's a light-coloured area to the left of his chair which is obviously a blemish and I didn't spot it yesterday.
Also, I removed the white bits on his rifle and now wonder if they should have been left .... hmmmmm can't quite work it out at the moment ..........

Rachel's are fantastic and there's no way I could reach that level, but also I am not actualy trying to achieve the perfect photo - that's why I usually leave all the ragged edges which are usually quite easy to tidy up if that's what's required - I'm only trying to make them slightly more palatable whilst leaving most of the degradation as it is (this is all I ever do on my own old photos). It's a convenient different approach or course, because I haven't learned to do all the things Rachel can do!! lol

Well you probably have better things to do with your time and photo restoring can make people go a little odd :)

Infinite patience is a 'must' if you're serious about getting to grips with it.

geniebug
18-09-12, 21:36
If only - but I'd presume to have the surname, since the photos came with the ladies, whom I have identified.

Rachel - the spot could have been a moth hole (just joking) - I hadn't even noticed, but now that I know, it stands out like a sore thumb - before you touched it up .. lol
