A friend has asked me if I can help resource details of a Trial.

He's found out his GtG'father committed some crime - he doesn't know what, that's why he'd like more details, because he was imprisoned.

The trial was in Kent - with a reference No. HO27/134/278 on 6 Jan 1863 - could anyone point me/us where to look please

Thanks :)

Do you have a name for this person.

newspapers might describe the case, assize records should give details, prison records a description of him and what happened afterwards.

the TNA reference should show the actual court where the case was heard - those records would be held locally.

I found the staff at Maidstone Heritage Centre/Library in Kent very helpful.

There are 44 people tried on that date at Canterbury.

Oh thank you all for your helpful suggestions :)

Shona - I don't think I should give the man's name here, without my friend's permission, sure you understand.

I'll pass all the other links on and see how he gets on.

Very grateful.:)

Of course. The info from Ancestry should help your friend.
