I'm trying to find out which regiments were stationed at the Curragh in 1904 as I have a Francis/Frank Wade previously McQuade born 1870 in Jarrow, South Shields who marries in Sunderland in 1904. This confirms what my mum said about an uncle joining the army and dropping the Mc. either before he joined or after he was in. According to the parish marriage register he says his residence is at The Curragh - Ireland? Unfortunately it didn't give any further details.

I've had a quick go on fmp to see if I can find his army record but found an attestation in 1888 for a Frank Wade born 1870 in Sunderland which is at least 2 years before he joined. As I have him on 1891 census with his widowed mother.

Think I remember you can search the 1911 census in Ireland but can't remember where.

Any help much appreciated.

I've got a CD with the Army List from 1900 which shows the following on page 20:
Staff of the Army
XIV - CURRAGH, comprising the Curragh Camp and the towns of Newbridge and Kildare, with the surrounding country and Glen Imaal, County Wicklow.
MAJOR-GENERAL
Aide-de-Camp
Assist Adj-Gen
Dep Assist Adj-Gens. Jenner, Maj. Sir W K W, Bt, 9 Lrs, p.s.c. (for Instn.) - 27 Aug 96
Blakeney, Maj. E. F. J., A. S. Corp
Brigade Major (temp) Woodward, Bt. Maj. E. M., Leic. R, p.s.c.
(... more officers listed...)

TROOPS QUARTERED IN THE COMMAND.
Cavalry. 8 Hrs. 21 Lrs.
Artillery. R. H. Art., M. Batt.
Engineers.
Infantry. 2 Bn. Leic. R.
Army Service Corps 7th & 17th Cos.
Militia. 6 Bn. Rif. Brig. (temp)
Royal Army Medical Corps No. 17 Co
Army Ordnance Corps No. 6 Co. (Hd Qrs.)

So if we can find a 1904 Army List, it should have something similar.

Apparently The Genealogist website has a 1904 Army List but you would need to pay to view it, and I don't know whether you can browse through or if you have to search for a name.

Also S and N Genealogy Supplies (the same company that runs The Genealogist) has a CD of the 1904 Army List for sale at £11.95:

Their website says they are having problems with online ordering at the moment and gives details of how to order by phone instead.

Thank you so much Kite.

He wasn't an officer I shouldn't think but you've given me some regiments to look up which I'll do.

Also I looked for the wife Elizabeth in the 1911 census thinking they might be stationed at another camp in the UK. Much to my surprise I found her back in Sunderland in same road/house as in the 1901 census. However she's now a widow with 2 children, Ann born in India c 1908 and Francis born in Egypt c1909.

So now do I look for an overseas death for Frank in Egypt or get a birth certificate for one of the children (would it have the father's service number/regiment on it?)

There's this one on FMP:

Name: WADE, Frank
Station : Mhow
Country: Indian Subcontinent
Year: 1909
Page: 234
Age at death: 38
Record source: GRO Army Death Indices (1881 to 1955)

Couldn't see one in Egypt.

Perhaps Elizabeth was pregnant when she was widowed in India and then had to sail back to the UK, but had her second child on the way (I had to check when the Suez Canal was opened to make that work, but that was back in the 1860s!)

Couldn't see certain birth regs for the children.

Thanks Merry - have ordered the death certificate.

Will see what it says on it - though it's going to take a couple of weeks longer than normal to arrive est despatch date 21 Sept

Sorry got the children's place of births back to front, Ann was born in Egypt probably on way out and Francis in India around time his dad died.

Thanks for looking Libby, Kite and Merry.

I didn't think he was an officer, I was just trying to show what information the Army List would have about the regiments stationed at Curragh Camp, i.e. that it has a list of the officers and charge and also a list of the units stationed there.

Captain Lawrence Oates (of Scott's Antarctic expedition, the one who said he was going outside and might be some time) was in the same regiment around the same time and it's mentioned where they were posted here:

Quite a lot of interesting stuff on that site.
