Ralph Barrow - where did he come from, where did he go?

Married 24 Jan 1892 at Canton (South Wales) church of St John
Ralph Barrow, 38 yrs, widower, mariner on the high sea, son of Thomas Barrow (D = deceased???) mariner
& Rachel Mary Boulter, 39, widow, of 44 Clive Street Grangetown (Cardiff??) daughter of Thomas Bolter fruiterer. (Thomas died in NY state 5 Jan 1892, but I suspect word hadn't got back to Swansea and then on to Rachel by her wedding day)
witnesses Percy Frederick Bowden & Jessie Anneth Bowden (I think they were brother & sister)
All 4 signed the marriage cert

I know quite a lot about Rachael Mary Boulter prior to this marriage (born Gt Yarmouth 1844, but knocked 10 yrs off her age when she was married for the first time to John Spicer in Cheltenham in 1877; in 1881 they lived in Warminster & in 1891 she'd reverted to her maiden name and was working as a cook in a hotel in Swansea.)

Can anyone get a handle on Ralph, please, before 1892 and afterwards?

There is a birth of a Ralph Iley Barrow Jul-Sep 1854 South Shields, which would make him about the right age on the marriage.

Oh, and the 1891 Wales census has an entry for Ralph Barrow, age 35, Seaman, born Durham So Shields, a boarder at 20 North Church St, Cardiff St Mary, Glamorgan.

Thanks for looking Kite - I had seen the 1891 census entry and wondered if it was my man, but couldn't tie him up with a father named Thomas.

There is an R Barrow death at sea Sep 1897, but I haven't managed to find any more information yet to see if it could be Ralph.

There is a Ralph Barrow born South Shields on the 1861 census but his age is 4 which is a bit too young. His parents are Alexander Hamilton and Elizabeth (presumably Alexander is his stepfather), and there is a possible Alexander Hamilton / Elizabeth Barrow marriage in 1857 in Sunderland district.

Going back through earlier census, 1861 S Shields has a Ralph Barrow (son) living with Alexander Hamilton & wife Elizabeth. I think she was formerly Mrs Barrow & that Thomas Barrow may have died in 1856, but the children are varied names - perhaps both parties had been married before and there were "yours, mine & ours" children.

I missed the death at sea for Ralph - there is a 1895 death fror Rachel Mary Barrow at S Shields in 1895 - age 42 yrs. I suppose that would fit with the age given at marriage - the details on a death cert as only as good as the knowledge of the informant.

Ralph Iley Barrow married Phoebe Wilson at Jarrow Dock 28 Dec 1874.

Phoebe Barrow, d/o Ralph Barrow, married 22 Jun 1897 at Church of St Bede, Jarrow, her groom was Christopher Halligan.

They (and their rapidly growing family) were recorded in Jarrow in 1901 & 1911.
In 1901 Phoebe reported as born Jarrow, in 1911 South Shields - c1876.

I can't find Phoebe in an earlier census, nor Phoebe Barrow nee Wilson.

I've now found a marr between Phoebe Wilson & James Stephenson Freeman
Mar qtr 1878 - Tynemouth reg dist. (If you took the chain ferry across the Tyne from S Shields to N Shields, that would put you in Tynemouth reg dist.)
