Wasn't your William supposed to have been born about 1830ish?

The census page I found from your ref showed a family headed by William aged 58 with a son, William aged 7. Can't really be certain what the surname is without at least playing about with the image in photoshop or similar......

By the way, don't give up.....new records come online all the time.

The page is very torn and the image isn't good so I'm afraid I can't read it.

Ah, I've found them on the 1861 census and their name is Shepherd.

http://search.ancestry.co.uk/iexec?htx=view&r=5538&dbid=8767&iid=WRYRG9_3442_3445-0471&fn=William&ln=Shepherd&st=r&ssrc=&pid=10736692

here's the ref so you can see it next time you are at the library:

RG9; Piece: 3444; Folio: 23; Page: 39

Merry from reading Zoe's thread on Rootschat that 51 census has had amendments added to it

http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,608533.0.html

Zoe the image is really bad but the two William's are aged 58 & 7, those parts are very clear. I can't make out the surname either. The older William appears to be born at Selby & the younger Barnsley.

Well, 1861 is definitely Shepherd!

Seems to be 100% the same family as all forenames, places of birth and ages match exactly, plus occ of head and the address too!

Just checked on FMP to see if the image is any clearer ... it's worse, it's a grayscale scan & looks blank! Not surprisingly FMP have transcribed the whole page as ? ?

The people your interested in on the 51 image definitely don't have the surname Harries, the name ends in erd & with abit of squinting & raised eyebrows I can just about make out Shepherd so sadly not the family you were hoping for.

sorry i shouldve added it has it has amndiments on it for my surname hairyes in 1851 cencus and the father was william harries fathers job solictor which we know williams father was. i wonder why anyone has amanded this name to hairyes they also said the surname was harries amened to hairyes and birth of william harries born bansley had nbeen ameneeded to 1935 , very confused now

Double checked by looking at the 1871 census. Eliza Shepherd is now a widow and with her sister, Mrs Eleanor A Pickering and her husband, Thomas Pickering. Confirmed this is the right family again as Eleanor Anna Greaves married Thomas Pickering (1846 FreeBMD) and Eliza Greaves married William Shepherd (1842 FreeBMD).

Don't be confused - they are not the right people! :)

It looks like Shepherd to me.

Whoever made those corrections/amendment is wrong.

Presumably the person who submitted the amendments is/was trying to make the record fit their research!

As it's sure a bad image when Ancestry have transcribed it Harries is what the person thought they could read which is obviously not the case.

I read that, but I can't see any amendments. Ancestry have transcribed the name as Harries whe it should be Shepherd. I don't see anything else. ;(

I understand what she means Zoe would like the contact name of the person who made the amendments. It's an Ancestry username which you can contact but you have to be a member of Ancestry.

So if you go to this link

http://search.ancestry.co.uk/cgi-bin/sse.dll?indiv=1&rank=1&gsfn=&gsln=&sx=&f1=&f2=&f4=&f18__n=&f12__n=&rg_81004011__date=&rs_81004011__date=0&f27=&f14=&f15=&_8000C002=&_80008002=&_80018002=&f7=2332&f8=270&f9=30&gskw=&prox=1&db=uki1851&ti=5538&ti.si=0&gss=angs-d&pcat=35&fh=12&h=36048853&recoff=

and click on the pencil besides the amendment it will take you to the correction and then click on the username and then onto the profile where you'll be able to send a message through the contact button link.

But bearing in mind that that isn't the family you're looking for you might want to explain to the contact its not the right family.

I've come off the page now but someone had added info in Dec 2011 re their ages & surname, maybe it depends on the viewer we are using?

At the bottom of my screen when I view images I have tab/section called 'Ancestry Index' you can see the whole pages transcription & view/add updates to them.

Thanks for the link, Maggie (I don't see that on my version!)

I'm very sure the person who made that change is someone Zoe has already been in touch with on GR.
