1861 Saffron Hill, Holborn, Middlesex Piece 187 folio 61 page 31
Thomas Hughes 32 builder's labourer born St Luke's
Margaret 30 born Saffron Hill
William 6 born Cowcross Street (near Farringdon tube station, Clerkenwell)
Francis 4 born Cowcross Street

Margaret died in May 1870 Cripplegate (London City)

1871 19 Brackley Street, Cripplegate, London Piece 418 folio 18 page 29
Thomas Hughs widower 40 Labourer born London
William Hughs 16 born London
Frank Hughs 13 born London
Thomas Hughs 7 born London

I can't find Thomas or the three sons after this. There's a possible Frank Hughes in the navy in 1881 but I can find no more on him to prove or disprove it.

Margaret was from a basically Catholic family but she was married in a C of E church.

This looks like the naval bod:

Name Hughes, Francis
Official Number: 67515
Place of Birth: Marylebone, Middlesex
21 February 1853 ADM 188/48
Name Hughes, Francis
Place of Birth: Marylebone, London, Middlesex
Continuous Service Number: 6958B
Date of Volunteering: 26 August 1868
21 February 1853 ADM 139/870

If he volunteered in 1868, I'd expect him to be in the navy in 1871.

Thank you for finding that, Phoenix - I think I can rule him out anyway as born in Marylebone - means I can discount the 1881 chap.

There's a Thomas Hughes death in Holborn district Apr-Jun 1876 age 47. Or St Giles district Jul-Sep 1878 also age 47. Have you ruled those out?

No, I haven't Kate - I probably should do something about that. I suppose the Holborn one is quite likely
