I've been stuck on the parentage of James Riley for the better part of forty years.

Family legand said that the Rileys came over at the time of the potato famine. James Riley died in Portsea, Hants in 1843. His age was given as 49. (same age in burial register) On the 1841 census his birth place is shown as "same county"

The witnesses to his marriage are his wife's relations, so no clue there.

He was apprenticed as a smith 30 June 1808, aged 14.

Family Search shows the baptism of James Ryley 25 July 1794 in Newport Hampshire, son of John & Sarah.

The age is about right and I know people dart back and forth between IOW and Portsmouth. Are there any online burial records, so I can check that this promising candidate didn't die as an infant?

I was going to offer a look up on my Hants Burial CD, but it doesn't cover the IOW :(

IOW FHS has some funeral records online that might help.
