On the 1861 census I have Leonard Hale aged 27, Susannah West aged 27 (a boarder) and Ellen West aged 2 months (daughter)

RG 9; Piece: 1772; Folio: 74; Page: 6

1871 Susannah (Susan) and Leonard are married and Ellen is listed as Ellen Hale.

Checking the birth reg's. Mar qtr 1861 Stroud 6a 271 has an Ellen West and Ellen Hale.

Do you think this is the same person? Leonard WAS her father but the parents weren't married? They did marry in the Sep qtr of 1861.

It's only a twig so not buying the cert.

Yes, definitely the same person. Check her out on Glos BMD http://ww3.gloucestershire.gov.uk/bmd/MainMenu.aspx

Yes, if you look at Gloucestershire BMD, she is listed twice on there too - once as Ellen Hale, and once as Ellen West, and on both entries it shows father's surname as Hale and mother's surname as West. She would have been indexed under both surnames because of the fact that her parents weren't married.

Edit - snap, Scuda!

Damn! Been checking that BMD site for marriages, never gave a thought to check that birth on it.

Thanks both of you.
