Looks like "Ran" to me, but I wonder if that's right.

I'm not sure what it says, but I can confirm that HMS Hogue was still in harbour on 25th Dec 1852, so perfect timing for a wedding on 20th!

Could explain why my GG Grandmother married again if he deserted, but would the 2nd marriage be legal?

If it was seven years later, she would have been able to have him declared dead and then it would be legal to marry again.

Marriage was only 2 years later. So looks as if it was illegal. perhaps why they married and lived in Ireland.

I have been googling and it would seem the standard Royal Marines lingo for 'deserted' was 'run', so I think that is what is says.
