Did Thomas Abbott give an occ for his father in 1851 as well as the one you have from 1829?

On the 1851 census he is with Blakey Hartley a rag dealer but he is not listed as his son, on his marriage cert of 28 July 1851 he gives Blakey Hartley, labourer as his father. I have researched Blakey who had 8 children born between 1823 & 1838 with his wife Betty. Scrub that, there's another Blakey Hartley with a wife Elizabeth, those children were all born in Skipton.

General opinion among his decendants is that Blakey adopted him, both he & Joseph Abbott were rag dealers. In 1841 Blakey might have been in Heptonstall (& definitely in Colne at Windybank in 1835) but young Thomas has gone AWOL.

FamilySearch has a baptism for an Olive Abbott 9 Jan 1820 at Burnley, Lancashire, parents Joseph and Alice, and another for a Thomas Abbott 6 Nov 1825 at Pateley Bridge, Yorkshire, parents Joseph and Alice. I wonder whether either or both of these could be the same family. Lancs OPC doesn't seem to have the Burnley one so I can't check the father's occupation.

Rag dealer = Cloth Dresser??

A cloth dresser worked in the woollen industry. Cloth dressing was/is part of the (long) process of creating a length of woollen cloth.

A rag dealer is someone who buys and sells second-hand cloth.

Both of the above are out of my head, so may not be correct! :)

I guess one might follow on from the other, but I would think cloth dressing was a skill whereas rag dealing wasn't!

Ancestry has Thomas's baptism in the Parish of Heptonstall, 1829:

Name: Thomas Abbot
Birth Date: 4 Feb 1829
Parish: Heptonstall, St Thomas
Baptism Date: 31 Mar 1829
Father's Name: Joseph Abbot
Mother's name: Alice Abbot

The image shows 31st March 1829, Thomas son of Joseph & Alice Abbot of this Town, born February 4th, 1829. Rag gatherer. Ceremony performed by J. Charnock.

EDIT: Oh sorry, just saw you already had that.

Thankyou both for your input on this, I agree that cloth dressing would have been a skilled job (sorry not have replied before I've been preparing some MIs for Sussex OPC, fingers in too many pies at the momemt!)

Well done for finding that baptism on Lancs OPC, Janet. I can't get it to come up on "search all parishes", which is what I usually use; can you? I didn't realise there were records on there which weren't included in the overall search.

Thanks, Kite, that confirms what I've begun to suspect. Sometimes I find things that other people don't, and I think it's because one can't necessarily trust a site's own search engine.

I used a plain Google search:
"Olive Abbott" site:lan-opc.org.uk
On the first page of hits I could see one saying Olive Abbott - Daughter of Joseph Abbott & Alice.

Oh that's interesting. I'm just now taking in the fact that the abode is given as Hunslet, Leeds, whereas the baptism is taking place at St Peter, Burnley.
