Even if your ancestor didn't own property, they may be listed on there as a tenant, so worth a look.

People are often listed with initials and surname rather than with full given name(s).

Ooh! It was one of the things that LMA staff were really excited about getting digitised, and having trawled helplessly through the originals, an index does make life easier!

There are lots and lots of my rellies listed in there.

There doesn't seem to be so much from the 20th century and later part of the 19th century.

You wouldn't expect to find much from that period. From 1798 onwards, landowners were redeeming the land tax, so wouldn't appear in future years. The peak of record survival in the provinces in 1780 - 1832, with very little afterwards.

Right, I see, thanks for that info, Phoenix.

Thank for flagging this up Kiterunner, I now know where in St Clement Danes my 4x gt grandfather lived.

I've just discovered OH's 3xg-grandparents didn't just pass through their 1841 address, but were there from 1826!

It's inmteresting to see who your ancestors' neighbours were in those pre-census days too - two branches of my family tree lived in the same street long before my two ancestors married each other. I had seen references to members of one family in wills of the other family, and realised the two families were friends but wondered how this came about and now I see they were close neighbours. It can also be interesting to see what year a name disappears from the list if you are looking for a death, and also to see who takes over the house.

Finally renewed my Ancestry sub, so I've been able to look at this.

I found one of my people in the late 18th c.; he was where I expected him to be, although I was interested to see that although he was quite a wealthy man, he was renting the house.

Does anyone know if the number in the left-hand column is the house number, or just a schedule number?

For the ones I looked at for OH's ancestor it was the street number, as it's the same as on the census and a couple of certs I have.

None of my lot, but I've found my ex's Highos and a few of his other London ancestors. Thanks!

I thought it should be; I was just unsure because my man appears consistently at no. 33 Lower Bryanstone St. on the Land Tax records, but no. 37 on another record I have for him.
