View Full Version : Where did Mary live?
An extract from Death Duties 1836. Can anyone make out what information this gives about Mary Pitman, please? She is the executor in line 6, for J Coppin of Calais, and I'm hoping this tells me where she lived, but I can't make it out.

Which court is it, Scuda?

It looks like Magnetia or Magnolia but I don't think either of those are place names, apart from a couple of Magnolias in the USA. I don't think it will be that, though.
Magnesia?
I think it's Magnetia or Magnelia. There's a Magnesia in Greece - could she have been there??
Thanks, Kite and Asa, your suggestions are about the same as my attempts, but none of them seem very likely. I have a copy of the will, and Mary Pittman certainly appeared in person when probate was granted, so I would think she was probably still in England (and I've no idea what John Coppin was doing in Calais, he was living in England until the previous year).
So many mysteries!

Could it be Marquetra? I have found the death of Miss Mary Pittman aged 73 at Marquetra, France in November 1838 - this would be the correct age for the Mary in question.

Yes, I think they have just left out the first "r". I did think there was a q in it but couldn't find anything that would fit!
Well, that's one little mystery solved. Thanks Kite.
