I have Thomas Coker born in East London in 1818 and baptised at Bethnal Green in 1826. He married Susan(na(h)) Obey formerly Cliffe nee Orange (born 1801 Bethnal Green) in 1838 St Dunstan Stepney. She had two daughters Susan(nah) (later Shearman then Wilkins) and Rosalina (later Shearman) born Bethnal Green 1829 and 1832 respectively.

In 1841 they are at Canons Buildings, Suffolk Street, Bethnal Green - Piece: 692; Folio: 5; Page: 3 and in 1851 at Alpha Terrace, Bethnal Green -Piece: 1540; Folio: 270; Page: 46

I can't find them afterwards and Thomas maybe the Thomas Coker who died in Shoreditch in 1855? Even so, Susannah should (?) be the Susannah Coker who died in Sep qtr 1876 Bethnal Green aged 75.

Can anyone see Susannah (and Thomas?) in 61 or 71?

Asa, have you found both daughters in 1861/71 to be sure mum isn't lurking with one of them?

Susannah is hiding for me at the moment. I did wonder if she might be in an institution listed with her initials, but didn't find anything.

Nearest I can find in 1871 is a Mary Coker, widow, age 70, born Bethnal Green, living at 2 Cannobert Street, Bethnal Green.

Aren't there chunks of census missing in 1861 for that sort of area?

Thanks everyone:)

Merry, I've lost Susannah after her second marriage to Thomas Wilkins in 1852 so far but I only started looking at this lot yesterday so will persevere.

I'll have a look at her, Kiterunner.

Phoenix, I don't know to be honest - I think I have most of mine in 1861 from East London - Grays Inn Lane is the hole that always frustrates me :-)

That's interesting - can't see Mary Coker on the 1851 or 1861

I tried tying death registrations to the various Mary Cokers to see if that Mary Kate found was a 'spare', but instead of solving anything, I just got confused! lol

Re Thomas and Susan Wilkins.....they had two sons bap at St Matthew's Bethnal Green. Thomas Oct 1854 and Frederick George Nov 1855 - father's occ wine cooper which fits with the occ on the marriage cert which I have since forgotten!

I've only looked for FGW so far, as I couldn't see a death for him before 1861, but that isn't helping either :(

I've just been looking at the Wilkins boys too, Merry - they and Susannah's eldest son Edwin Shearman from the first marriage seem to all be off somewhere secret.

I was thinking about the death reg for Susannah Coker and I don't think there's another likely candidate for it other than mine. I don't really want to get the death cert but I'm starting to feel a pull. I'm descended from John Coker who I am sure is Thomas' elder brother.

Late back to work :S

If Susanna is only 55 or so when Thomas dies (and had two husbands before him) might she have taken up residence with someone even if not married them?

Was Susannah's first child actually named for his father, rather than Edwin which is what the 1851 census says?

Yes. :(
Some of my family are missing from the 1861 census; apparently it (not the family) may have been eaten by mice.

Phoenix, I think you're probably right - assuming the 1855 death is Thomas which it could well be.

Thank you, Merry - I hadn't checked his baptism. There's no obvious death for him with either second name.
