Fanny (sometimes Frances) Gardner Lishman was born in Jan. 1853 in Gateshead, Co. Durham. I have her with her parents in 1861 and 1871 in Elswick and in 1881 at "Colchester Tower", Corbridge, Northumberland.

She married Robert Smith in q3 1887 in Hexham district. Someone told me they had two children Ernest and Lena, and she is reputed to have died in November 1923.

I can find no trace of any of them after the marriage. I've done a general search of Ancestry but can't find any likely census or emigration sightings.

In 1911 Ernest is a boarder in a house, listed under his full name, Ernest Godfrey Smith.

Robert and Helena are together, she is listed as Helena D Smith, rather than Helena P Smith! Robert's occ is the same as in 1901 - Bank Cashier.

But Fanny isn't with them.

I can't find any F Smith's b Gateshead abt 1853 on the 1911, but there are no obvious death for her. There is a death in Q4 1923 with the age two years out, but from memory that was in Staffs, so don't know that it's her. (thuink it was listed as Fanny G Smith)

Oops, I lied!! Fanny is with her husband and daughter in 1911, just that her surname is missing! She is transcribed as 'Fanny Gardner S' lol

If Fanny had her middle name on her death reg then it's fairly possible the one in Walsall district is the one. Working from FreeBMD, there are no deaths for Frances G Smith or Fannie G Smith, of roughly the right age, anywhere. There are two for Fanny G Smith - the Walsall one which is the 'right' quarter and year and one in Derby in Q3 1926 which is also a couple of years out for age.

I hadn't realised how few F(anny/rances) G Smiths there were.

Thanks very much, Merry. It's a bit late to start piecing this together now. I'd more or less given up hope on the surname Smith!
