I came across this notice in the London Gazette

http://www.london-gazette.co.uk/issues/36088/supplements/3152/page.pdf

In the bottom right hand corner is a reference to Leslie Jack Scrutton, b. 1906 who I believe was my grandmother's brother.

The Gazette seems to show that Leslie was in the territorial army in WW2 and was promoted to 2nd Lt in March 1943

I am assuming that there is no way i can find out any more about this (?)

Also, after the war, Leslie and his wife emigrated to Toronto, and I believe they make have children still living there. I would love to try find out - does anyone have any ideas how I should go about this please?

Thanks

Edit - actually I think they emigrated to Toronto bfore WW2

I believe that TNA have the Territorial Army records as I have heard that they are planning to put them online in the next couple of years, starting with Durham. So presumably if you go to TNA you would be able to look at the records without having to wait for them to go online.

There are 3 public trees on ancestry with Leslie Jack Scrutton in them; have you tried contacting those tree owners in case they have info about his children?

Oh sorry, I thought that the Territorial Army during WW2 was the same as the Home Guard, but now looking at the TNA site it doesn't look as though they are the same thing, and it's the Home Guard records that they're putting online. And it doesn't look as though TNA do have much Territorial Army stuff, sorry:

No problem Kite - thanks for letting me know

I now think that Leslie & his wife went to live in Toronto before WW2, so he must have returned to serve in the army

I also have the name of their daughter! :)

Also I think that this

http://search.ancestry.co.uk/cgi-bin/sse.dll?rank=1&new=1&MSAV=0&msT=1&gss=angs-g&gsfn=Minnie+Baker&gsln=Scrutton&sbo=1&uidh=nn3&pcat=ROOT_CATEGORY&h=20849717&recoff=5+6+8&db=StructuredCrawledSites-51&indiv=1

relates to the obituary of Leslie's wife, Minnie

I have been going round in circles trying to work out whether I can read it and how that website works! :d

So far as I can see, that site only gives references and not actual documents, and the only possibility is to take out a subscription to the Toronto Star Archives

Do you think that is right?

Thanks

Probably. But I've found obituary references by Googling before which linked to the site of the newspaper that had originally printed the obituary and then on that site it wouldn't find the obituary! So it depends on whether the Toronto Star Archives actually includes obituaries. The RootsWeb index probably grabbed the reference in 2002 when that issue of the paper was published.

I think you'll be in for a long wait, before any records appear for him at Kew. You can follow his career at Kew via the Army Lists but this will only give you dates of promotions/change of regiments/resignation of commission and not any personal information.

Thanks Kite - having done some more Googling I'm not very hopeful!

Thank you for that, Anne - I'm used to long waits :d

Google Scrutton + Toronto and all sorts of stuff comes up.

Fanks AN - that would fit!

Apparently Lord Justice Scrutton (who, I think, presided over "The Brides in the Bath" trial) was also related - or so I've been told -I've never really tried to work it out:o

Starting from your Ancestry link, Joan, I found my way to here:

http://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=web&cd=13&ved=0CKsBEBYwDA&url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.yourlifemoments.ca%2Fsitepage s%2Fstatic%2Fobits%2FcityResults_42_1.asp&ei=KfzdT_PlCofH6gGo_Y28Cw&usg=AFQjCNG1fEU3-rVkx2kFqkIzgU6mSBOWew

Initially they tried to get me to sign up with altogether too much personal info for my taste, so I hit escape and found that I had fallen into the honey jar! Don't know if they'll be of any use, but have PMd you obits for 5 Scruttons (one in two different papers). I searched all since 1900 in all available cities, but only came up with deaths starting in 2004.

I didn't see anything about your Leslie Jack Scrutton.

Re the Home Guard:

I telephoned the Army Personnel Centre today about the Home Guard records and was told that one receives very little information for the £30 charge, ie usually just the date of enrolment and address.
