You need to order them from the Probate Service:

http://www.justice.gov.uk/courts/probate/copies-of-grants-wills

The National Probate Calendar has the entries, both in 1899:

GIACOBBI Francois of 522 Union-street San Francisco California US America land-owner died 1 October 1881 Administration with Will (Limited) London 15 July to Alfred de Bernardy genealogist. Effects £490 14s 1d.

GIACOBBI Marie Francoise of 516 Union-street San Francisco California US America widow died 12 March 1884 Administration (Limited) London 5 July to Alfred de Bernardy genealogist the attorney of Louis Camille Agazio Giacobbi. Effects £413.

It doesn't look as though Marie Francoise left a will, so all you would get for your £6 in her case is the letters of administration, but those might be useful if you want to know how she was related to Louis Camille Agazio Giacobbi.

Louis Agazio Giacobbi was on the California voters' register from 1888, and he's on the 1900 census in San Francisco with his wife and children. He says in the 1900 census that he was born in California in 1858, and his parents wre born in France.

In his passport application he says his father was François Giacobbi, born Corsica, emigrated to the USA about 1852, died 1881.

Louis died in San Mateo, California on 15 Mar 1950, date of birth 15 Apr 1858, mother's maiden name Salicetti.

That rings a bell; I think we may have found her on another thread. Could be that this François was Agatha's husband, and he remarried to Marie after she died.

I remember where I found Marie now; there's an Ancestry tree for her and François/Francesco and their children, which is just about compatible with her being a second wife after Agatha's death.

You'll find them in the 1880 US census under the surname Jiacobi.

Thanks Jacky....have replied.

Mary....that's what I'm hoping for and also hoping (if it's the right person) there is some mention of whether or not Agatha had more children.

Francois (maybe this guy) married Agatha in 1848 in Paris. Then Agatha is supposed to be dead by 1851. Plenty of time for a very fertile young woman to have more children.

Got your pm and yes I will get the wills please....not sure if i need Marie's but might be interesting.

Also................there is an annoying reference to an A****a Giacobbi in USA. Every time I google, I come up with this woman. It's quite recent as well.

It's just occurred to me to wonder why probate was taken out in London, when François, Marie and their son Louis lived in California.

The only reason I can think of is that they owned property there, for which an English probate was required. And if the Ancestry tree is correct, that François was born in Corsica and sailed to the US (presumably) from France, perhaps he never lived in England. In which case, I wonder whether he inherited property from Agatha?

I also wonder why the probate and admon weren't taken out until 1899, when François died in 1881 and Marie in 1884.

Looking back at some of the old Ariel threads, the references to Agatha's trust fund in the London Gazette only go up to 1899...

Alfred de Bernardy calls himself a legal genealogist in the 1891 census. Maybe he was a sort of Heir Hunter of the day?

Mary........I hope everyone here knows how I get when something about Agatha pops up......lol

I've been thinking he was the man responsible for hiding Agatha from Libby...

Looks as though my supposition was right (CW De Bernardy was Alfred's father):

This is the 1883 edition of the book, but I can't find Ariel or Giacobbi listed:

Mary you are a legend girl....a dead set legend.

Now if only I can find a definite death for Aggie.....this might just do that with a little reference to her if I'm lucky.

You'll hear me yell from your place.

It takes me to leave the country for something more to pop up about Agatha! :d

I read this thread yesterday and had similar thoughts to those Mary mentioed in her earlier post. In paticular, these bits:

Did anything happen with the administration Mary found for Agatha?

Obviously not Merry...lol

Are you back home? Hope I didn't spoil your hols if you're still there.

Sounds promising, doesn't it?

I think we need someone to look for Agatha's admon at Kew.

I understand that isn't a simple process, but I also think it could be worthwhile. Maybe you should put up a separate thread asking if anyone else has ever looked for a PCC administration from the 1850s, to get a first hand idea of the complexities?

Yes, I am back home and this was the first thread I read!!!

I've put up a new thread.......not exactly sure what I'm even asking, but I did what you suggested......lol

You are all better at anything to do with Agatha than I am.
