I have the NSW marriage certificates for 2 siblings - Thomas Henry Thompson and Nellie Louisa Thompson. Both of them claim their parents are Thomas Thompson and Ellen Louisa Walters. Their YOB's are 1860 and 1868 given the ages.

I have found them on the 1861 and 1871 English census. Obviously Nellie is not on the 1861.

1861 RG10; Piece: 3993; Folio: 130; Page: 25

1871 RG 9; Piece: 2914; Folio: 63; Page: 31

Thomas married in 1885 and Nellie in 1904. I can't find their births, their parents marriage nor when they came to Australia. The parents were deceased by 1904 according to Nellie's certificate.

Can anyone help? I'm sure it is a case of my being blind but I still can't find them.

I've had a good look and I can't see anything obvious.

This might be the baptism of the sister Florence (from famsearch):

name: Florence Thompstone
gender: Female
baptism/christening date: 07 Sep 1856
baptism/christening place: Manchester, Lancashire, England
father's name: Thomas Thompstone
mother's name: Ellen Louisa
indexing project (batch) number: I00980-3
system origin: England-EASy
source film number: 438178

This is presumably the matching birth:

Births Sep 1856
Thompson Florence Newton Salford 8d 60

You have the census references the wrong way round, Kit.

And so we know what we're looking for, this is the census info:
1861 34 Cable St, Salford, Lancashire
Annie Butterworth Head Mar 32 Salford
James do Son 1 Do
Thomas Thompson Visitor Mar 35 Mechanic Manchester
Ellen Do Do Do 30 Salford
Florence do Do 7 Do
Thomas Do Do 1 Do

And 1871 at 45 Rosamond St., Chorlton on Medlock, Manchester, Lancashire
Thomas Thompson Head Mar 46 Mechanic Mchester C on M
Ellen L " Wife " 41 Wife to " " Salford
Florance " Daur Unm 17 Nil Mchester
Thomas H " Son 11 " "
Nellie L " Daur 3 " "
Charles L Beswick Lodger Mar 27 Salesman "

Now I'll see if I can find anything...

There is a Thomas Thompson birth registered in Salford district Jul-Sep 1859 vol 8d p 66, sub-district Salford Greengate. Can't see anything obvious for Nellie at the moment.

Mary that looks good. I saw the Florence Newton birth but was hesitant.

Sorry Kate. The birth for Thomas looks good. I even tried looking for Ellen instead of Nellie but couldn't find anything.

What is disturbing me is that I found a Florence Thompson n the 1881 census with her uncle Harrison Veevers. There is also a Thomas Thompson and Ellen Veevers marriage and reasonable baptisms on familysearch, except the place of birth is a long way from Salford. I can't think how Thomas and Nellie both got her surname wrong though.

There's a possible death for Ellen:
Oct-Dec 1875 Ellen Louisa Thompson age 45 Northwich vol 8a p 213.

There are some Thompson / Veevers births on Lancs BMD, in Clitheroe:
John 1849, Edmund 1851, William 1854 and George 1855.
This family in Clitheroe in 1861:
Thomas Thompson Head M 34 Engine Tenter in Mill Yorkshire Bashall E
Ellen Wife 37 Cotton Winder Lancashire Chatburn(?)
John Son U 11 Scholar Do Clitheroe
William 6 Do
Margaret Mother U 63 Yorkshire Waddington.

So I think this family is probably the Thomas Thompson / Ellen Veevers couple.

Thanks Kate and Allan. So the veevers definitely aren't mine.

I didn't think of the OPC's. I'll have a look, thanks Allan.
