I know very little about Mr John Wright.

I know he has a daughter called Mary, who was baptised 13/4/1823 at St Mary's, Barnsley, Yorkshire and that Mary's mother is listed as Elizabeth. The baptism entry says he is a weaver.

This baptism is also showing as Silkstone, Barnsley, Yorkshire.

In 1852 Mary and her husband, James Derwent immigrate to Australia. On the passenger list Mary states her parents John and Elizabeth Wright are living at Staleybridge, Lancashire, England.

I think John and Elizabeth also have another son Joseph who was baptised on 19/9/1830.

Can anyone find John and Elizabeth on the 1841 or 1851? Or Mary on the 1841?

I have her on the 1851 with her husband.

Bridge Street, DUKINFIELD?

You said you were interested in Dukinfield, Kit?

Kit

Maggie no I don't know where John is from. But thanks for looking.

The first image looks possible, the second one looks great as it has a Joseph as well, but Mary was clear both her parents were alive.

Yes Phoenix I said Dukinfield. But why do they think John died?

Does it actually say Mr John Wright on Mary's baptism, Kit? Which would suggest he was of quite high social status.

It's entirely possible that he's in Staleybridge, but separated and Elizabeth finds it easier to call herself a widow.

It's the right place, there is a Joseph, and Elizabeth is not that old. She might be back with John on a later census.

If this is the correct family, these are baby John's birth details:

WRIGHT John MIRFIN 1839 Dukinfield Tameside Cheshire DUK/3/35

No, sorry it doesn't say Mr John, just John.

It must be, mustn't it, because John Wright marries Elizabeth Murfin in Silkstone, 16 Dec 1822.

Very true or Mary was misunderstood.

Now to find a single or dead John.

Maggie FMP have another entry like you found: HO107 piece 2237 folio 257 page 23 but not crossed out. Looks like the family ended up on 2 pages and ancestry had the crossed out one.

Could Mary write, and was she living locally? If she were just round the corner, she prsumably would know what happened to her father, but if she had moved away she might presume he was still alive when he had died. Who were the witnesses at the wediing? Was it family or friends?

Kit

Mary could read but not write and she was living locally in 1851.

I haven't filed the cert so I'm not sure where it is or who the witnesses were.

There is a John Wright on his own in 1841, age 45, cotton weaver, not born in county, at Leech's Houses, Dukinfield. Piece 109, book 12, folio 11, page 16.
