I am trying to find out who this Edward Brown married. His wife, Mary Ann, b 1844, came from Thursford, Norfolk and they married some time before 1881 (I assume!)

In 1881 they were in Tiverton, Devon.

I cannot positively find either in 1871.

Edward was studying to be a teacher in 1861, when he was still in Dukinfield; he was a draper in 1881 and back to a tutor in 1901.

Mary Ann, similarly, is at home in Brinton in 1861 and I can't find her either in 1871.

FMP only yields 3 Edwards born Cheshire for the right age range, and none look right.

Any ideas?

I only see Mary Ann Jarvis in Brinton?

He's Edwin, not Edward, on the 1881, plus I think it says he is 42 which would mean he was born about 1838-9. Not that that helps!

I don't think you said if you'd seen them on the 1911, Phoenix?

Don't remember if you have Ancestry, if not:

Mary Ann Brown Wife abt 1845 66 Female Married Dressmaker Thursford, Norfolk, England 67 Mortham Road Hyde Cheshire

Mary Griffths Boarder abt 1896 15 Female Single Dressmaker Madeley Wood Hill, Shropshire, England 67 Mortham Road Hyde Cheshire

Ancestry had mistranscribed his occupation as 'Salor' but it says Tutor. I submitted the correction.

I've just seen you did have this. It's on another of your threads.

Thanks for that, Janet!

I have him on every applicable census, save the 1871 one, which is crucial.

My OH had rellies from Dukinfield. I haven't looked at them for ages. I think I'll have a look tonight.

Looking at the 1841 and 1851 censuses, it looks as though Edward's parents were called Edward and Ann, so if we do ever find a possible marriage for him, at least we can check if the father's name is right. I can't read the father's occupation in 1841 though - could be Colier?

There is an Edward Brown / Mary Jarvis marriage on FamilySearch, 12 Aug 1878 Shrewsbury, Shropshire, his age 34, his father Edward Brown, her age 32, her father John Jarvis. If only it was a full transcription showing occupations! Anyway, possible?
