James Broomfield is the son of James Broomfield & Emma nee Killick.

He is born Dec qtr 1858, Westminster RD.

His father was born in Shalford, Surrey & was locally famous as a cricketer.

James senior appears to have died Dec qtr 1880, aged 48 in Guildford RD

Emma is shown as a widow in 1881, living in Send Marsh, Surrey (in Guildford RD) as a beer house keeper.

James junior's eldest son is b Jun qtr 1882 in Guildford RD. He is yet another James, shown as born in Send in later censuses.

Logically, James Broomfield junior would be in Send in 1881. His occupation on later censuses is saddler.

FMP doesn't like the name Broomfield or, indeed, much to do with this family. I cannot find him anywhere in 1881. Can anybody else?

I can't even find his marriage, though in 1911 his wife Emma says they have been married 30 years.

.

OH and I got married at the church at Shalford, as did my sister and my parents!!:)

My grandparents lived just along the road towards Guildford in the Great Quarry.

Happy memories.

I'll have a look for you, Phoenix.

Mum got married in Shalford church too, Elizabeth!

And yes, James junior clearly had no imagination.

Whoops, missed your post. Yes, that's him in 1911.

I now think I remember us having this conversation before!

My Gran's funeral was held in the church too, and I cried bucket-loads. I have very happy memories of Guildford and Shalford. My Mum grew up there.

I haven't found anything promising yet, but will keep looking

I have found him in 1891, 1901 and 1911. However, not in 1881 and no obvious marriage.

Do you have any inkling of Sarah's maiden name?

Drat, it is Sarah.

I didn't even notice that in 1901 the family is down as Brookfield

ElizabethHerts

Yes, I was about to say they were mistranscirbed as Brookfield in 1901.

He should be easy to find, but isn't!

None of the children seem to have useful middle names, and this isn't a direct line, so I have no certificates. I'll have a look for Sarahs born Bayswater, to see if that throws anything up.

Off topic, but they have gone for a modern layout in the church. I can understand the reasoning for flexibility, but I'd rather have the old pews. My Gran would hate it.

Hmm. There is a Sarah Preater in Croydon in 1881 and a Sarah Preater marries a James Broomfield in Lambeth in 1883.

Mum would have been horrified. On the other hand, I remember taking her to an old Sussex church, and with her osteoporosis, there was no way she could sit comfortably in a pew.

I kept looking at that one, Phoenix, but wondered if it was slightly late. (You said a son ws born in 1882?) However, it's a good area. Without buying ther certificate it would be difficult to know.

Got him!

James Bloomfield [sic] at 6 Robin Hood Terrace, Sutton, aged 22 b Kensington, harness maker, lodging with *fanfare of trumpets* Henry Preater of Bayswater.

Thank you, Elizabeth, for nudging me in the right direction. Thank goodness I live in Croydon & travel regularly to Sutton, so recognised (belatedly) they were adjacent.
