Many entries list only an occupier - has anyone decided what this means? e.g. http://search.ancestry.co.uk/iexec?htx=View&r=5538&dbid=2319&iid=33175_626640_1122-00112&fn=Benj&ln=Pittman&st=r&ssrc=&pid=910193 and http://search.ancestry.co.uk/iexec?htx=View&r=5538&dbid=2319&iid=33175_626640_1122-00108&fn=Thos&ln=Pittman&st=d&ssrc=&pid=910014

Is it:
a) the occupier is also the proprietor?
b) the proprietor is the last one listed, even if much further up the page?
c) something else?

This uncertainty arises with several of my London Pitmans, and I would love to know.

When I looked at them before I just assumed b), but I don't know that's right.

I've just looked at some of mine who are both Proprietor and Occupier and they have their name in the Proprietor column and "self" in the Occupier column.

Thanks Merry. I'd been assuming b) but thought I ought to check. I'll continue assuming b) knowing I'm in good company!

As the Duke of Portland is mentioned further back up the page (and like the Duke of Westminster now, owned great swathes of London) maybe he was the proprietor.

I think that must be it, Jill. Thanks
