Thank you Babs, I already have the marriage, but thanks for looking for a baptism.

There are quite a few families named Tiver (without the 's') in the North Petherton area of Somerset, but I haven't been able to link them to my George yet.

Sue, I've been looking on my disks and I can't find anything for Tiver/Tivers.

The nearest I could find was this:

Day: 7
Month: Dec
Year :1760
Son/Daughter: Son
Forename: Geo
Surname:Tarver
First Parent: Michael
Second Parent:
Notes:
Parish:Milford
County:Hampshire
Record source:Hampshire Baptisms
Data provider:Hampshire Genealogical Society

There appear to be a few Tarvers in the Lymington area. Perhaps the surname got changed over time?

Thanks Elizabeth.
I'd never thought about a name change like that, but I've been saying the name 'Tarver' in my attempt at a Hampshire dialect () and it does sound like 'Tiver'.
Hmmm I wonder........................;)

Sue, when I was searching for the name Tiver/Tivers the only ones I found were your family when/after George married.

I did find one marriage apart from George:
John Tiver and Hannah Richards
10 Oct 1774 Portsea St Mary

Those were the only two Tiver/Tivers marriages on the entire disk (1754-1837).

It's the vowel sounds, Sue, when I think of it.

Growing up in Devon, I know that vowel sounds can alter one's perception of a word!

Thank you for looking for me and for the link to the CALM Hampshire database Elizabeth. I'm off to have a look now.

The main thing that puzzles me about the spelling though is that George Tiver(s) was a schoolmaster and also a frequent contributor to various publications in the early 1800s as Tivers, so presumably he would know how to spell his own name!

That's what is puzzling me, too, Sue. It wasn't as though he were illiterate. Also, you would think you would be looking for parents of a certain social class.

Re. Michael Tarver, I couldn't find any other children for him or a wife.
