View Full Version : how do you search for an addresson the 1881 census?
I'm looking for a Sarah Stevens who lives at 20 Bentham-terrace Bentham-road Homerton Middlesex. She was there in 1878 when her sister died and she was still living there in 1884 when she died.
I've gone to the 1881 census on FMP and put in Bentham as the street address and as the residential place but I get no results.
I also tried Homerton but had no luck.
What am I doing wrong?
On FMP you need to know to say London and not Middlesex and Bentham* in the street name. You can add Hackney in the Residential Place box if you like, or search everywhere in Hackney if it doesn't like the street name.
Ancestry is a lot easier! lol
No results for Bentham Terrace though. Wouldn't it be easier to look for her by name? 20 Bentham Rd has other people.
Thanks Merry. How do I do it on ancestry?
I can't find her by name at that address which is why I tried the address search.
I could be having a blonde moment.
Type the word Bentham (or 20 Bentham) in the street address box and Hackney in the Keywords box.
What's the rest of her details?
I can't see Bentham Terrace in 1871 or 1891 either.
She isn't the 78 yr old widow b Bethnal Green? (she is at Kenton Road, which joins onto Bentham Rd)
Sarah was born 1802 in Shoreditch Middlesex. She was Sarah Gilbert and married Mr Stevens as she was a widow on her sisters probate in 1878. Both Sarah's and her sisters probate indexes said she lived at the Bentham address.
Sadly it is 20 bentham terrace, bentham street, so the street number may not be number 20.
It is very infurating not knowing the husband. I have found a William Stevens marriage in Essex but I have no idea if it is the right marriage.
She isn't the 78 yr old widow b Bethnal Green?
Can you give me a link? I'm going crazy here.

It's the next street.....
Thanks. It must be her but why say she was at one address when she was elsewhere?
Unless she owned it, but didn't live in it?
I'm off to bed, thanks for your help.
Where do they get the address for the probate index? If they take it from the will then do you know when she wrote her will? Perhaps soon after the death of her sister, so maybe before she moved out of the property in Bentham Terrace?
Just looked at the probate entry and I see it says she died at BT and it was an administration anyway!
I can only think she rented out BT (maybe it was too big for her?) but chose to go back at some point? (assuming she owned it, of course)
