Can you find any of this lot in 1871?

Charles Arkell born May 1839 Stanley Pontlarge, Gloucestershire - although he is supposed to have emigrated to the USA in 1870 (has wife Sarah E from New Jersey on later US censuses), but his youngest son was born in England 6 May 1871, so it's possible he was still in England then?

His wife Eliza, nee Brown, born 25 Oct 1835 Newington, London. They married 25 Oct 1860 St Dunstan in the West, London. On the 1861 census they are at 33 Broke Rd., Shoreditch, with Eliza giving her age as 24.

Children:
William Charles Arkell baptised 26 Jun 1861 at St Mary Haggerston, Hackney, birthplace 33 Broke Rd., so he must have been born soon after the census.
Sydney Arkell born 7 Dec 1862 Kentish Town
Letitia Helen Arkell born 1865 Wandsworth - she is with cousin Thomas Arkell White on the 1871 census, so don't bother looking for her!
John Arkell born 1867-8 Wandsworth
Aycrigg Henry Arkell (aka Harry) born 28 Apr 1869 Peckham

Then the youngest son Edmund Brown Arkell was born 6 May 1871 at 199 Albany Road, Camberwell, baptised 26 May 1871 at St George, Camberwell. Father's occupation Woollen Warehouseman, and it does not say "but has left wife to go and live in USA with another woman", lol.

I know the whole family didn't go to the USA because I've found Eliza with sons John and Harry on the 1881 census, and Letitia is with relatives on several censuses then working as a governess in Cardiff. But where is Eliza in 1871?

Update - found Eliza calling herself Mary E in 1891! So it's possible she's going by Mary in 1871 too.

*tuts* some of the odd numbers are in district 2 of Camberwell,St George, but not the ones after the 120s! The even numbers are in district 1.

Have to go and tend to some cooking........

Could they have gone to the US in 1870 and returned immediately before Edmund's birth in May 1871?

One of my families went to and fro several times which somehow is not what you expect at that time.

(Some of mine lived in Broke Road Hackney!)

I don't think so, Lindsay, because it looks as though Charles went to the US leaving Eliza and the children behind. Though I wonder whether he could have taken the oldest two boys? I haven't found out what happened to them yet.

I've found William Charles in London in 1891 so it seems he didn't go to America with his father.

I forgot to say I did look and look in 1871 on Ancestry and FMP but couldn't find them. Maybe the upheaval in their lives caused them to be missed from the census? Very frustrating.

Thanks anyway, Merry.
