He would have been pretty old in 1846 if he was already an adult in 1791. Not saying it's 100% impossible, just pointing it out :)

Maybe he was the grandfather?

I think he would have to be at least 21 to be party to a deed, so that would make him born 1770 at the latest, making him 76 (minimum) in 1846.

I've only read the first bit, but Dennis McCartie already has at least two adult children in 1791, so he was probably at least 40 at an absolute minimum, probably a fair bit older, so he's not going to be fathering more children 50+ years later. However, he could still be a relation or even a direct ancestor of John McCartie, just not his dad!

Do you have any particular reason for thinking this is John McCartie's father, Brenda?

on johns marriage dertificate his father is dennis mccartie deceased, john was born mill street cork, and the spelling of the name is unusual,we thought it was spelt that way by accident but no its the right spelling.and this dennis in the paper is from cork.so i thought maybe a connection.brenda xxx

Could it be the spelling of the surname that's unusual, Jess, i.e. McCartie rather than McCarty?
