FreeREG has a marriage 28 May 1818 at St Mary, Great Massingham, Norfolk - William Newstead, bachelor, and Maria Watering, spinster. Witnesses John Watering and Maria Watering.

You mention on his daughter Maria's thread that she had a sister Sophia - FreeREG has a baptism for Sophia Newstead 2 Jan 1825, dob 30 Dec 1824, Norwich St Martin at Oak, parents William and Maria, but it gives father's occupation as shoemaker. Apparently there is a note below entry: "Admitted into the church on 4 April 1841".

Just wondering how you know he was born in Scole, because the censuses say Saul or Sall?

Hi Kate, Thanks for looking for me :)

I saw that marriage in Gt Massingham, ((there is another William Newstead to Maria marriage in Yarmouth too - I found that couple so discounted them.)

I didn't want to get excited about the Maria Watering one because I can't see why they would want to marry in Great Massingham... my Maria was born in Norwich, Great Massingham is quite a way out.

I don't know why I have him as born Scole  You've made me look again..:o On the 1841 & 1861 census it just says Norfolk. On 1851 it says Saul and 1871, Sall. Do you think it's Salle ??? (about 20km from Great Massingham)

For the FreeReg baptism for Sophia, I don't know,
his daughter Maria's marriage cert has him as a draper in 1842, I would imagine a change of skilled trade unlikely, but maybe I'm wrong.

They were living at St Margaret's in 1841

Hmmm, FamilySearch has a baptism for a William Newstade 3 Aug 1794 at "Sall, Norfolk", parents Phillip Newstade and Ann Pierce. And they have the Sall PR images available to browse so I guess Sall is an old spelling for Salle.

(Edit - GENUKI says that Salle can also be spelt Sall or Saul).

What do you think?
3rd or 8th of August?

Later on the page he writes 23d November

It looks like 3th to me - not unusual in old parish registers.

That's what I thought, Kate. But I thought 3th only existed in French schoolchildren's English exercise books ;)

I'll take it as the 3rd then. Thanks :)
