Nothing to add to BK6 from this thread

Libby has asked me to post this up :D

We are trying to find a copy of one or the other of these two books/journals:

First book:

History written with pick and shovel
(military buttons, belt-plates, badges and other relics excavated from Colonial, Revolutionary, and War of 1812 camp sites by the Field Exploration Committee of the New-York Historical society)

Author: Calver, William Louis.
Publisher: New York Historical Society
Pub date: 1950.

A copy of the above book is held at the Westminster Reference Library
Ref: A 745.85853
Copy: 1 Reference book
Material Location: Art Stack

Pages we are interested in are 265/66 which should have information regarding a James Eyre of Leeds and his seal, noting that he amassed a fortune of £400,000. We need to know what else it says about him (I think the above may be the end of the bit about him)

The same info about James is in a second publication called:

The New York Historical Society quarterly bulletin, Volumes 13-18

and appears on pages 123/24.

A copy of this journal/magazine is supposed to be at Kew, but when I look on their library catalogue I can't find it. That's probably because I've never used the catalogue before!

Not sure how it works because I haven't lived in the UK for so long, but would it be possible to get it with an inter-library loan?

As I said on the other thread, I've been in touch with the New York Historical Society before, and they were quite helpful, but they'll only photocopy and send a maximum of 20 pages of a document. If you want any more, you have to go in person.

Inter-library loans are still available but I don't think Libby lives in the UK.

I think not because it's in the ref library not the lending library?? I'm sure I saw something which said "not for loan" or words to that effect :o

I suppose I could ask at my local library, but I don't think they get those sort of queries very often going by past experience!

Maybe I should ask! I could photograph the pages for Libby perhaps?

No, I know: I meant one of our UK members might be able to get it if nobody from here ever goes to Westminster Library.

History Written With Pick and Shovel

Libby, can you somehow get access to the University of Queensland library on the St Lucia campus in Brisbane? They supposedly hold a copy of History written with pick and shovel.

I also found one for rent, don't know about shipping to Aus but you could ask:

For a price, there is also one listed on ebay:

You could try the Queensland "Ask a Librarian" online service in that case.
