I am trying to identify Wilfred Steel who sailed to New Zealand on the Ruahine Feb 23rd 1923 with a bunch of missionaries. His last UK address was 12 Denstone Street Wakefield and he says he was b c1892.
He was ordained in Melanesia 1924/25
He sailed back to the UK from Western Australia in 1930 on the Barrabool, with a wife called Emma and they are going to 12 Denstone Street Wakefield. Again he says b c1892.

I am not sure where he married or any more about Emma except she was b c 1901.

He was then curate Lakenham 1930-1932
Curate Wensley with Leyburn Yorkshire 1932-1934
Vicar Crosscrake co Westmoreland 1934-1937
Rector Inverness 1937-1939
1939-1940 in Norfolk
1949-1952 Marske
1952-1959 Markington
Retried 1961 and died 1966.

But who was he and where was he born?? I am hoping the address is the key but I can't find anything more to link him to it and hopefully some parents.

Does it say where he was born?

There's a couple in Aus but they seem to be accounted for in the electoral rolls.

Sorry....you don't know where he was born either. There is one reg Q2 1893 in Rotherham. let me check the census for him.

This is the only birth reg in 5 years:

Births Jun 1893
Steel Wilfred Rotherham 9c 705

Edit: but he died the next year.

Perhaps we need to add an E?

That is the only birth, but there are a couple of census with others who don't seem to have been born, which is the point I gave up!

I tried Steele but there was nothing I could make hang together there either.

Darn, I could not make the address come up when I looked, but that does not help does it. I was hoping that I would magically find them all there, but not to be.
I will have to wait another census release or two! :D

It does not sound like the sort of address the posh Cheshire one in 1911 might have moved to, but maybe the one in Knaresborough, son of Samuel might have. When I traced him back he seemed to have been a bit old to have said he was b 1892, he was baptised in July 1890.

Another in Harrowgate transcribed as Stell, but Steel in the image.

That is the one baptised in 1890

I looked at the probate records for wills proved at Wakefield between 1928 and 1932. Two wouldn't open, but none of the others died at that address.

Obviously the address might have been to do with his wife, though I can't see any marriage. The only one I did find (1922) with a Wilfred (George) Steele and Emma, he was b in 1906!

I can't find the marriage either, he was single in 1923 and married in 1930 and he spent those years in the Melanesian mission and Australia, I have not found any marriage in Aussie so it could have been anywhere in the Pacific.

looking back on what I do know about him - he was in the Islands 1923-1926 when he resigned and was in the TB sanitorium here in Hawke's Bay, then he went to Brisbane for a few months in 1927 and then was in WA until he went back to England.

There is no marriage in NZ and none in WA that I can find.

Hatfield Herts is a hop skip and jump to St Albans, where the lodger hailed from in 1911 - coincidence?

Wilfred Steele married Beatrice Heath 1916 in Qld.....so that will be the lot on the electrol rolls.

That takes them out for you anyway....lol

I seem to be able to exclude more than include, I guess that in the end there will be one man left standing. Lol

I have just got some information that he was unmarried, but he had his sister with him, so the Emma b 1901 who travelled from Australia to the UK with him must be the sister.

English clergy pension records say he was b 15 March 1887, so why he would twice say he was b c 1892, I don't know. The sister may narrow him down, she said hopefully!

Miss Emma Steel b c 1900 sailed London to Sydney 22 October 1926 on the Mamilius, she was a weaver, but there were a whole heap of weavers travelling together, so she may or may not be connected.

There is a suggestion she may also be known as Emily in some records.

Got him! (I think)

None of them could count, his father changed his DOB on every census. I think they are the family in Goole. They are the children of Charles and Tamar who died in 1900 and Charles married again to Emily in 1901.
Wilfred was baptised 1 May 1887 which ties in nicely with the birth of 15 March 1887 in the clergy records.

Emma b Sept q 1896 Goole.

I'm glad that's solved then!

Presumably you eliminated the other one registered the Q before?

I see there are two UK deaths for people of the right name b 1887. :(

What I am hanging my hat on is that he is the only one with a sister called Emma of anything like the right age, and that his baptism is a few weeks after the DOB from the pension records. I am uncomfortable that he says he is the same age twice on passenger lists and that is not what he said to get his pension....
