BK6 updated from this thread

1851 census:

Stephen Lofts widower 67 b Duxford, Cambs
Lydia Sheldrick single granddaughter 27 b Sawston, Cambs

http://search.ancestry.co.uk/iexec?htx=view&r=5538&dbid=8860&iid=CAMHO107_1761_1761-0123&fn=Lydia&ln=Sheldrick&st=r&ssrc=&pid=4555917

Stephen Lofts had been married to Kitty Moule in 1804. He was actually born in 1775 but lost some years possibly because his wife was older. To my knowledge Stephen and Kitty only had one daughter, Jane Lofts (1805-1842)

Jane Lofts married John Sheldrick in 1824, so it would be straightforward if Lydia was her daughter. However, the children of John and Jane Sheldrick I have are:

David Lofts 1825
Alfred John 1829
George J 1830
Jane 1835
Bennet 1837

I could cope with a missing baptism, but after this census she vanishes! So, can anyone find anything more for Lydia Sheldrick?

There's a Lydia Sheldrick age 20 in Cambridge in 1841, born county, with a Rebecca Sheldrick age 30. They're servants.

I couldn't work them out! I mean I couldn't work out if they were connected to each other. The place seems to swarm with Sheldricks!

I wonder if Lydia could have been born before John and Jane's marriage, but I can't see a baptism for her on FamilySearch in the name Lofts.

It means that some people have her on their ancestry trees and have her dying in 1869 in Chesterton, Cambs. I wonder if any of them have found her in 1861, or have the death cert.
(Edit - doesn't look as though any of them has)

I got all excited then. Sheldricks are in my tree, have not yest managed to connect them to Cambridge, where I think they may have a connection as my Nan was in Cambridge and she married a Sheldrick. Will keep an eye on this.

There seem to be rather a lot of SHeldricks around, I have discovered!

I got distracted by that link as it shows a load more siblings for Jane Lofts:

Brother
William 1807 Lofts 1807-1874

Brother
James 1810 Lofts 1810-1887

Sister
Louisa 1889 Lofts 1819-1889

Brother
Philip 1822 Lofts 1822-

I don't have any of those! Kitty Moul (the mum) would have been well into her 50s for the last one!

Anyway, about Lydia.....Maybe she was a Lofts and died/married under that name?

I don't have time to check this as dinner is ready, but

David Lofts Sheldrick, b 1825, marries in the late 1840s and one of the poss brides is a Lydia. He may die before the 1851 census so is Lydia actually a widowed granddaughter-in-law?

Oooh, nice one Elizabeth. I think that is who she is then! I guess she is just hiding in 1861.....

Sorry Jess - I'm being a bit slow! I hadn't realised I hadn't put them on the baps list *doh* - thanks very much though!
