This is kind of progress from a very old thread here: http://www.genealogistsforum.co.uk/forum/showthread.php?t=5823 that I never really got time to start looking in to properly further than making contact with some descendants who couldn't move the research along.

Anyway, that thread was picked up on google by another descendant this week which has left me looking into the Goodman side of the tree. Although I'm not directly related it's my great grandmothers 2nd husband so it would be nice to fill in some gaps.

Olive Linkson (nee Fenton) married William George Goodman in 1918 (I have the cert but not to hand) - he is a widower and she a widow.

This is his first marriage I believe: http://search.ancestry.co.uk/iexec?htx=View&r=5538&dbid=1623&iid=31280_198239-00181&fn=William+George&ln=Goodman&st=d&ssrc=&pid=3631840

20 Dec 1916 to Ada Eveline Reynolds at Christ Church Barnet.

He is 36 so born in 1880.

His father: Henry Goodman, Licensed Victualler
Her father: Robert Reynolds, Deceased.

There's a possible connection with Eleanor Jane Goodman who married in January 1916 - but her father is down as Harry and occupation is "deceased". http://search.ancestry.co.uk/iexec?htx=View&r=5538&dbid=1623&iid=31280_198239-00182&fn=Eleanor+Jane&ln=Goodman&st=d&ssrc=&pid=7342062

Now. I have played and played and played with every census William George Goodman should have been alive for and I cannot find him in any of them. Not even an "ooooh - he looks possible".

I'm also struggling to find the copy I have of the marriage to Olive in case that throws up any clues. And the Will that's mentioned in the linked thread at the top.

If anyone has time to have a try and see if they can do better than me I'd be very grateful

Zoe

For reference.... Hertfordshire doesn't appear to be on ancestry 1911 Census yet which is why I've obviously not found them on there yet. Just trying to see if I can pinpoint then on FindMyPast with an expired subscription

Zoe, can you remember if his age tied together for the two marriage certs? There are very few William Goodmans on the 1911 right age and unmarried and the age on the marriage cert you posted the link to looks a bit oddly written.

Here they are in 1891!

http://search.ancestry.co.uk/iexec?htx=view&r=5538&dbid=6598&iid=SRYRG12_602_604-0462&fn=Nellie&ln=Goodman&st=d&ssrc=&pid=18313188

Nellie is actually Eleanor and she is on the next census (see post #6) with her sister, Annie. Nellie is b Teddington, but transcribed as Toddington in 1901.

Births Mar 1891

1911 they are in Lincolnshire and William is with his parents and single. I didn't look at ones that far from London before!

Merry,

you're a godsend. I looked at that Merton family as well but for some reason I had it in my head that Eleanor was older than him. I think because she married first.

I'm so out of practice at this genealogy lark. I hope you all have patience for me as I start to research again

Thank you

Z

I was stuck because I couldn't read Eleanor's age on the marriage cert. Prob said 24. I thought it might be 29!

Henry's probate entry has the right occupations for them both!!

Oh My God. I have done this before. I remember that probate entry now. The only note I have written in my family tree file next to William is "Harts Horn". I didn't have a clue where it came from. I must have done it fleetingly and never gone back to it in order to write it all down.

I definitely never found the census though so I swear I"ve not been wasting your time.
