View Full Version : Sweetbaum/Cwitbojm
Does anyone have any bright ideas as to what this name might be recorded as?
it is possible that there was nobody of that name in the country pre WW1, but I wonder if they are lurking under the blankets somewhere in 1911.
Looking for Isaac & Hyman, possibly brothers, born in the 1890s, nationality Polish or Russian.
S'pose you've tried just plain 'Baum' ?

Having in the distant past transcribed some of Southwark in 1881, I know what a pig's ear enumerators made of furrin names. I have no idea whether these people would have been literate if they were on the 1911.
Now Ancestry, FMP and the Gazette won't let me in, so I'm going to wash up instead.....
Ooh, thank you, Merry!
I'd seen Hyman's death, but not his burial. Fanny appears to have died in Hove.

I can see Mariam going to America in 1953 and 1957 (fmp) but not Isaac.

That's not fair - I still can't get in!
Wow!
Thanks guys for all this. When I have a spare minute, I'll be off to Local Studies to have a look a the directories.
Perhaps they did come late (and in Miriam's case, leave early)
It's odd, I never thought of Sweetbaum as an unusual name, but it's obviously rare.
I assume they just hopped across the channel to get here, so don't show in immigration records until the late 1930s, in MEPO.
gets a mention here too

There's also this Naturalisation for Isaac at TNA

Thank you, guys!
Even in the states, there are hardly any around, and it looks as if most of Isaac's family went out there.
When I'm next at TNA, I must look up those immigration papers.
Here's another transliteration of the name:
Tsvitboym.

Jacob Glazer and Annie nee Sweetbaum came from Lutsk in what was then variously described as Russia or Poland, but now is in Ukraine. I have only just found an online tree which shows Annie as the sister of Hyman and Isaac.
