Elizabeth Allen (https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.3.1/TH-266-11775-45911-65?cc=1769414&wc=13751375)

Elizabeth Allen was baptised at Kenwyn 1808 on August 7, parents John and Elizabeth. She is No. 79 on the right hand page and then the next column is the age. The number is 2 but I can't understand what is after the 2. It could mean weeks, months or years and I can't work it out.

Can anyone take a guess?

Isn't it 'w' for weeks?

I don't know Merry. The entry above is a W but the one I'm asking about doesn't look like it and there is the squiggle just above it so I'm not sure.

While I'm at it what was the age at which you were considered 'at full age' when you get married in 1828?

It looks like a w to me, Kit. I think the squiggle is just an "s" i.e. w(eek)s.

My question mark was because I couldn't see how it didn't look like a 'w'!! I thought maybe I was looking at the wrong entry :o

I agree with Kate that the squiggle is an 's'.

You could contact the OPC to ask for it to be checked

Thanks Joy.

I think this is the woman I am after but she married on 6/1/1828. The register says she married by banns and the part about consent is blank which I took to mean she was 21. However being born late July 1808 doesn't add up.

As she was married by banns and given relatives witnessed the wedding (same surname anyway) can I assume she is mine. On the 1851-1871 census she says she was born at Kenwyn or Truro depending on the census and the link above is the only person who fits the place and timeframe.

At a guess, of the people on my tree who married as minors, only about 10% have any mention of it in the PR and the numbers are no higher when there's a box for age on the form. The majority say 21/22 regardless of them being 19/20, so I wouldn't worry too much about that element of your findings. You could look at other marriages in the parish to see if there are ANY showing minors!

Are you sure the 1808 is her birth. If it's her baptism, she could have been a bit older.

It's her baptism but she was 2 weeks old when she was baptised so she was also born in 1808.

Merry I haven't noticed any other marriages giving consent.

Libby I'd love the age to be 2 years, but no amount of wishful thinking would make her 2 years old. lol

Now if I could just work out if she is somehow connected to the other Cornwall Allen's I have.
