is annoying me now. With a name like that it ought to be easy to find his death.

Did he die in WW1 I now wonder? He was born in 1880, he married Annie Bottomley in 1906 and I can see only two children born to them -

P (female) 1909, Bredbury, Cheshire

and
K (male) born 1916 Stockport, Cheshire.

If anyone has access to WW1 deaths, I would be very grateful for a lookup, thankyou.

He doesn't appear with Goldstraw on Ancestry - or in the service or pension records but I'll have a look around - what parish was he born in?

Asa, Herbert was born (registered) in Stockport, Cheshire, parents William Goldstraw Wood and Ann(ie) Green.

Elizabeth, that looks like a possibility. There aren't many Hrbert Gs anywhere.

EDIT - thankyou both.

Elizabeth, that chap comes up as Herbert Gordon Wood born in Barnes on Ancestry UK Soldiers died in the GW. There really aren't a lot of Herbert G Woods about in the military records.

Thankyou both again.

This man is not a direct relative so I think I must leave this alone now!

If he ever moved from Cheshire then there are several deaths that could be him in various parts of the country.

Thanks Merry, I just don't know if he moved or not. I've played with his extended family before (all his siblings). Most of the siblings/the siblings children are left some money in a Will, but HGW doesn't get a mention, nor do his children, which is a bit odd in the circumstances.
