Follwing on from a previous question about Catherine's husband :
http://www.genealogistsforum.co.uk/forum/showthread.php?t=11446
I am now trying to trace her birth , as per the marriage register, her mother was Catherine McOwan and reputed father was John Sho[a]dans, have had aboslutely no luck so far.
Census Detials I have are:
Census 1881 Kildinny Cottages, Forteviot, Perth, Scotland
Census 1891 Balgarthina Farm Cottar (House), Liff, Benvie and Invergowrie, Scotland, Listed as Katie, Farm Servants Wife
Census 1901 Union Buildings, Falkirk, Scotland
Census 1911 1 Silver Row, Falkirk, Scotland

She died in 1936 and her mother's name was listed as Catherine McCowan.

What I found interesting was that her maiden name has been listed as McEwan/McOwan and McCowan :eek:on the various birth registrations for their children (I have tried all these combinations but have had no luck).

Any assistance in seeing what I have missed would be appreciated.

Looks as though it might be Monzievaird which is 2 miles west of Crieff:

Are you sure about the father's name, Wendy? Would you be able to post up the image of that part of the cert, please?

It does look like Shodans or Shadans, doesn't it? But there are no exact matches for either of those surnames anywhere on Scotland's People, nor on FamilySearch. There are apparently 3 people called Shedans on the 1881 Scottish census but they are in Glassford, Lanarkshire and none of them is called John. Bit of a puzzle.

Ancestry has a John Sheddan, portioner of Ochterarder, and his son James, acquiring lands called Maillerhill in Perthshire in the early 18th century.

And FamilySearch has a John Sheddans christened 17 Jul 1785 Falkirk, Stirlingshire, son of John Sheddans and Nelly Hogg. I wonder if he could be connected to your John Shodans?

Ah, the most common version of the name seems to be Sheddan. I'll see if I can find any likely John Sheddan.
