View Full Version : South African Research
I have a few of my clergy who go off to South Africa and marry or die there. Does anyone know of any free sites which might be useful - BMD or newspaper archives would have the sort of information I could use.

I don't think there are any BMD's online apart from a few on FamilySearch from other denominations, but there is this newspapers database, but not free:
http://www.newsbank.com/readex/product.cfm?product=305
But I don't know how you get access to it. I think you might need someone who belongs to an American academic library.

I've found a few burials on this site:

I have not yet been able to trace a "free" site. I came across a free trial site but when I inputted by SA family could not see any that would want to make me subscribe.
Do you have any specific destinations within South Africa?
There is one website that has something.
Try the national archives. from memory it is a bit difficult.
http://www.national.archives.gov.za/
and this:
http://www.e-family.co.za/
this one has some photos of graves:

You have to pay for this one. I've not used it but have bookmarked it.

There is a contact to organise a free trial.
For more information or to arrange a product trial, contact Readex at 800.762.8182 or
[email protected].
No idea on cost though.

I think the free trial is for institutions though, Kit. I could be wrong though.

I had relatives who emigrated to South Africa and I found the South African board on rootschat very helpful. It helped that they were 1820 settlers and I got most of the information from the 1820 settler museum.

I don't know Kate. It just says to contact.
There is a section for genealogists but that only contains american newspapers.
