I really must think about getting the world wide thing for myself, because it is needed more and more these days.
Anyway, please could someone, when they have time, check the passenger lists to America for Nicholas Downing born 1820 in Durham, Iron Founder. It would have been between 1871 and 1891.......sorry that I cannot be more specific, but he is nowhere to be found in this country in 1881 and his wife was a widow in 1891; also I can find no trace of his death in this country. I am therefore hoping that he went over to Philadelphia perhaps, to visit his sisters and brother and maybe to check out the living conditions there, but died somewhere along the way.

Although they look like they are Downings!! Could it be that he was mistranscribed on the death index? The one I found was a typed record. Is it worth contacting the Registry Office for that one???

oh very funny Joanie!!!

Yes he was from Chester le Street originally, but moved to Tudhoe which isn't very far away. I have him in 1871, but in 1881 his wife still says that she is his wife and does not declare herself a widow until 1891.

The only way to find out if that was him is by sending off for the cert I suppose, so will check it out.

Thanks Joanie

blame it on my advancing years, or stress or something.......yes, she was a widow in 1881 but not in 1871.

It does seem that your finding of a Nicholas Downey could be the key, and I will follow it up.

thank you Joanie
