Please could someone tell me what the occupation of William Mills is?

I have become completely immersed in this family, after my daughter bought a bible that belongs to the Mountain family. They have had me entrhalled!

So it is, Mary. Many thanks.

What are all those children doing there? I'm interested in little Stanford Mountain (Stanford Henry Mountain). His family were in Bury St Edmunds.

He went off to London and did pretty well for himself.

Daughter Hannah Maria was a schoolmistress in 1851; she was living with her parents, and had live-in pupils.

I wondered if it were some sort of school. There is a little girl about the same age as Stamford that I found in a school in 1851 and I think she is similarly by herself in 1841.

If the children were in schools, rather than at home, even if it were Bronte type schools or Do the Boys Hall, there would have been a bit of money somewhere to start with.

Thanks, Mary, that is interesting.

My daughter bought a bible in a charity shop.

It belonged to Percy Morgan Mountain and his bride Matilda Ellen (Eleanor) Collyer Woodgate. They married in April 1894 but sadly Percy died in 1895 from typhoid fever and diabetes. (Found in newspaper). Matilda remarried but not until the 1920s.

Matilda's grandfather was Nathaniel Collyer who was Naval storekeeper at the Island of St Helena during Napoleon Bonaparte's exile.

One of Percy's brothers was Sir Edward Mortimer Mountain.

I'm researching the family for my daughter and her husband, who are thinking about using the bible for their family bible.

Henry (born 1808) remarried to a Sarah.

In 1851 they are in Chelsea and he is a silk mercer.

Mary, I almost wish they were mine!

I think I shall adopt them.

Do you mean he left little Sarah behind to be a dressmaker?

*off to check!*

Did Henry leave a will? I see Sarah (the stepmother) in her widowhood in 1871 is housekeeper in a school in Sussex.

I haven't look yet Phoenix, except I searched Documents on Line to see if Mountains in Bury St Edmunds left any wills.

I only started this yesterday. Every branch is interesting.
