Isaac Smith and Ann

Also in the household is Herbert Ison.

What is the relationship? I know it says Son in Law but part of that is crossed out and something else written above it.

What?

I agree.

So Mrs Ison was the dau of Mrs Smith by her previous surname?

Marriages Jun 1870
Bradford Mary Jane Burton 6b 428
ISON Herbert Burton 6b 428
TONERY Joseph Burton 6b 428
Williams Charlotte Emma Burton On Trent 6b 428

So Isaac Smith married either Ann Williams or Bradford?

You've lost me

No connection in this family to Burton for a couple of generations.

I was thinking that if Herbert Ison was a step-son-in-law of Isaac Smith then Herbert's wife would be Isaac's step-daughter and therefore the child of Ann Smith with whatever her previous surname was.

I'll look at this again tomorrow.

Bl**dy Hell Merry a little deep that. :D:D:D:D

Actually, that doesn't work as he is unmarried (Herbert!)

I wonder if a connection is that Isaac's brother Charles married a Mary Ann Izon Stanley.

Izon / Ison

mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm

But it says Herbert is unmarried on the census! I expect he is Isaac's step son and it looks as though the enumerator originally wrote Son in Law and then tried to correct it to Step Son but crossed out the wrong bit.

On the 1851 census Herbert's mother is Ann 33 born Leicestershire Overseal, and his father is Jabez.

Isaac is unmarried in 1851, I can't find him in 1861. 1871 he is married

Search for Herbert Ison in 1861 and you'll find Isaac! He's listed as Isac and his wife is Faney age 39 born Overseal so I would think Ann under another name. Herbert's brother Jonathan is also there. They're listed as boarders.

Merry why do you have to complicate things when I'm tired.

So there may be a connection in with Smith's and Izon's.

Plus Mary Ann Izon Stanley (of Beaudesert) ------ In earlier generations the Stanley (of Beaudesert) family married into the Birch family. Then the Birch family married into the Smith family.

Need to have a none tired head to sort this out.

Can't see a marriage between a Jabez Izon / Ison with an Ann.

Hmmm....not sure I'm understanding all that. _However, I looked for Jabez Ison with Ann and Jonathan in 1841 and found this instead!

Family all transcribed as Suson (by Ancestry)

Hamlet of somewhere in Church Gresley.

John 50 coal miner Yes
Elizabeth 50 No
Ann 22 No
James 15 coal miner No
John 15 coal miner No
Eiza 14 ?girl No
Catherine 11 No
Jonathan 6mths Yes

So, you would think Ann is an unmarried mum of Jonathan. However, if this family is supposed to be Izon/Ison and Ann is a dau-in-law with Jabez not there, then it's surprising they are mostly Nos for county when jabez was born in Derbyshire.

The added mystery of no obvious marriage between Ann and Jabez only makes things worse!

Marg, do you actually need this part? *crosses everything that you don't* lol

Hamlet of Swadlincote

Merry I don't know if I NEED it, I'm curious though. Izon / Ison seems to crop up when Isaac Smith brother Charles marries Mary Ann Izon Stanley. On the marriage she was from Beaudesert in Warwickshire although born in Jamaica (which also intrigues me). I have Stanley's in Beaudesert linked by marriage to this family in earlier generations.

Church Gresley / Swadlincote would come under Burton I think.

I need to go out very soon so will try so sort this later.
