What does this stand for please?
I think the Y & L stands for Yorkshire and Lancaster.
But what do the other initials stand for?
(It comes from a WW1 pension record)
Thanks

Thanks Merry - he's the OH of the Fish & Chip lady and I have been trying to find out what he was doing while she was busy frying!
Hallamshire Volunteer Brigade sounds very possible

I think it is supposed to be a 1 not an I and it is 1st (Hallamshire) Volunteer Battalion, York and Lancaster Regiment.
(I was typing at the same time as you, Merry, but it took me longer!)
It's a rubber stamp job, Kite, and it's just a straight line for the I.

Oops, I mis-read what you said here. Don't you think a 1 would have a little line at the top?

Yes, I know, but I do think that's what it means.

Seems very reasonable....

If you look at the page of his record headed "Statement of the Services of..." it does say 1st H V B Y & L Reg for his "former service".
