Please can anyone help.
I am trying to work through my family tree of William Corten and Georgina. He worked on the railway for over 50 years, firstly for the Great Eastern and then for the Midland Railway in Derby. They were caretakers of the Derby street Baptist Tabernacle in Burton for over 20 years. They ended their lives in the York Street Almshouses.

If anyone has any information on any of these points I would be very grateful to hear from you.
Thank you:)

I live in Burton. I can look up stuff in the library but would need a lot more info.

I also have the Burton Directories for 1911, 1934 and 1964.

Derby St Baptist church is still there but a newish building. York St Almhouses are long gone (my grandmother lived in York Street in 1925)

I have a friend named Corten, they were from Swadlincote, just over the border in Derbyshire.

Welcome to the site Bizzielizie.

As others have said we need some dates and some idea of what information you need. For instance is this a married couple (I presume so)? Do you have their marriage record and census information or are you looking for these things?

I saw these deaths in 1929 and wondered if they are for the people you mention, but for all I know I'm a couple of centuries out!:

I don't know if you have access to Ancestry, but this looks like a possible match for 1901:

1911 Burton Directory has a William Corten (retired) at 107 Horninglow Road

another William (baker and grocer) at 163 Horninglow Road and a George Joseph (foreman shunter) at 80 Victoria Crescent.

These addresses are all in close proximity to each other and to Derby Street and York Street.

1934 Burton Directory only shows one Corten.

1911 census shows the William of 107 Horninglow Road to have a wife George Hannah. William is described as a Pavior. They are both aged 63 and he was born in March, Cambridgeshire and her in Kentish Town, London.

They have been married 42 years and had three children two of which died.

These tie in with the deaths that Merry found.

Thank you so much for all this information I had not been on to this website for a little while but have been working hard on my research. I appreciate your kind offer to help.
William and Georgina Hannah were married on October 23rd 1868 at March in Cambridgeshire. William worked for the Great Eastern Railway in March for a short time and then they moved to Derby to work for the Midland Railway. Finally they moved to Burton and he continued working for the railway as a goods guard then a shunter and finally a Pavior. He was in his 70s when he had an accident on October 30th 1902and was forced to retire.
They has Alice whilst still living in Cambridgeshire in 1870, William in 1873(he became the Baker), Spinks in 1876 ( I think he died but have no evidence for that) then John in 1883(my grandfather who also worked for railways). My private email is email address deleted I would appreciate anything else you are able to find locally ion Burton. Many thanks Liz

Hi Liz

I can't think of anything I can find locally that Merry hasn't suggested. The death certs are the only way of finding out how they died, unless you can come up with anything specific I may be able to find.

Don't we have someone with Cortens on GF? The name is familiar but not one of mine.
