BK6 updated from this thread

In 1851 Charles Smith 42 is married to Mary aged 35 and has one child, Charles Wm aged 2.

A few years later their last child is given the middle name Hayden. I thought this might be mum's maiden name, but there's no marriage to fit.

However, there is a marriage of a Mary Hayden in 1840. I want to try and prove this Mary was married twice, the second time to Charles Smith.

Here's the 1851:

and the possible marriage for Mary:

BUNCE Eliza Ware 6 999

HAYDEN Mary Ware 6 999

also a possible baptism for Mary which fits Mrs Smith's details:

Hertfordshire Names says that John Webb married Eliza Bunce, John Smith married Elizabeth Bennet. William Read married Eliza Dowton - I wonder whether Donsor could be a mistranscription of Dowton (or vice versa)? And John Surridge married Mary Housden. Hmmm. Is that another mistranscription? All these marriages were at Standon.

And on the 1851 census there is a John Surridge in Standon age 37 with a wife Mary age 35. So the 1840 marriage looks unlikely to be your Mary.

Oh, well done for finding those Herts marriages - I did look but having not found Mary I didn't try the other names!

I found another Mary Hayden on the 1841 census aged 25 in Ware in the household of another Thomas Hayden who I think is the brother of the Mary who married John Surridge. I wonder what happeed to her? I guess she's the wife of Thomas junr, so they are probably together in 1851, but I didn't look because I was still struggling with the other Mary!

I have to start the endless school runs shortly, so no tiime to check now!

Thanks again :)

Actually, she is listed as the third person in the house:

HO107; Piece 435; Book: 3; Civil Parish: Ware; County: Hertfordshire; Enumeration District: 3; Folio: 50; Page: 24; Line: 13

Aaagghhh.... I have to STOP this now!

I notice Mrs Mary Surridge was born in Standon, so doesn't match up with the Ware baptism I found, unlike Mrs Smith who was born there! Sadly Standon baps are not online anywhere, so I can't see if there is a bap for a second Mary there.

FamilySearch (the new site) has a baptism for Mary Housden 12 May 1816 at Standon, so it looks as though Hayden is a mistranscription on the GRO marriage index. If it was one of those old-fashioned s's it would be quite easy to do.

That's really interesting as I've not been able to access anything for Standon via the new FS.

*goes back for yet another try*
