View Full Version : Prison for non maintenance?

This is part of the ongoing saga of William Alfred Brown, my friend's mysterious grandfather.

William's daughter wrote to the MOD asking for a copy of his service records. For reasons which are not yet clear to me, they haven't yet done so, but they HAVE given her some snippets of information.

He went to prison in 1929 for non payment of maintenance. No other details.

We already had guessed that he was already married when he took up with friend's granny and that was why they never married.

My questions:

Would he have gone to prison for not maintaining a wife, even if there were no children of the marriage?

If he was in the RAF when this offence occurred, would he have gone to military prison, or civil prison?

Would he have been allowed to continue his RAF career?

If he was not in the RAF in 1929, would they later have recruited him, even with a prison record?

Thanks for your thoughts and opinions!

Don't know OC but it did take us more than a year to get my FIL's WW2 army records.

I would be really grateful if someone could look for the death of

Leatea or Leatia Brown, after 1934 and probably after 1950. She was born in 1907.

I'm chasing red herrings again I think, lol.

Thankyou.

Nearest I can see is Leata Olive Brown who died Jan 1993 Norwich, date of birth 3 Dec 1913. I can't see a Leata birth (any surname) in that quarter or the one following.

Thankyou for looking Kite.

She was born Leatea May Nicholas in 1907 and married in 1927 as Leatia M Nicholas. Ripe for mistranscription of course.

Leatitia?

Julie

Yes, that's what i thought too and there IS a Letitia Maud, but there is a separate birth ref for each woman, years apart, so Leatea/Leatia was intended as a name, I think.

It is possible that she is still alive or only recently died, I suppose.

In 1911 her forenames were recorded as 'Letia May' by her uncle. That hasn't helped me find a death/remarriage though!
