Hope I can make this all make sense as I"m very tired from the sun and none of it is making a lot of sense to me......

Harriet Bartram, born 1824 in Dickleburgh, Norfolk. daughter of Barnabus Bartram and Frances Unknown.

Until about 10 minutes ago I thought she may have died young as I"ve not got her on the census at all.

I was just doing a search on ancestry under her father's name and up pops a marriage for her in Hackney in 1875.

The marriage is to Christopher Mills, Painter. Bride's father's occupation matches that for Barnabus.

Searching for Harriet Mills born Dickleburgh on 1881 census brings her up living as "mother in law" to Henry Lewis in Battersea.

His wife is Elizabeth and there is a matching marriage for Henry Lewis to Elizabeth Mills in 1868 BUT she gives her father's name as Edward Mills, Bricklayer.

So..... have I got the right person in 1881? I'm sure it's very likely as DIckleburgh is a small place, although there are lots of Harriets and lots of Bartrams there (but only one Barnabus).

If I have got the right person where on earth is she hiding between her baptism in 1824 and her marriage in 1875?

ANy help much appreciated.

I think I may have sorted her out. She appears to be living with Edward Mills as his wife without marrying. Not sure why they then married and he used the name Christopher though so still slightly confused

There's a Harriet Bartram aged 56 on 1861 Census at Shimpling in Norfolk. She's a housekeeper, but the age is way out :(

Edit: Probably not her

Is this her in 1841 with Edward Mills?

The 1861 census gives Edward Mills occupation as Bricklayer.

Thank you Sue. You've spotted the same things I have. Seems to be a living in sin situation. He obviously used the Christopher thing because he knew 140 years later I'd be here doing this

Same as OH's grandad, Peter Henry Harrison. He didn't want anyone to know anything about his life prior to his marriage in 1908 so conveniently must have arranged to have his army records weeded so nothing before WW1 is recorded (he joined in 1903). He also made sure he wasn't on any census pre 1911 and has no birth record. Talk about covering your tracks, I need MI5 (or is it MI6) to find him.
