There are a lot of Dibley trees on Ancestry with a lot of errors! Thomas' mother may well be a Mary Smart and his wife probably is Sarah Lavell but until I can get to Berkshire RO to look at the PR's myself I'm keeping an open mind!

this one seems to have photos of the parish records. http://records.ancestry.com/Thomas_Dibley_records.ashx?pid=182157287

Thanks for that Anne.

However I think Ancestry.com has just found images from trees that include a Thomas Dibley. These are from a tree of Hampshire based Dibleys which, as far as I know are not related but may be another branch!

Thanks to the Berkshire Family History Society releasing Newbury parish records on CD I can now confirm that Thomas's father was Joseph Dibley but while Joseph did marry Mary Smart she was a widow which might explain why none of the trees naming her can find a birth. I believe I've found her previous marriage to John Smart in 1758 and he would appear to have died in May 1768 leaving Mary to remarry in Jan 1769. Quick work!

I'm intrigued as to why the Smart surname carried on through the Dibley line for several generations considering it wasn't Mary's maiden name? A Thomas Smart witnessed her marriage to Joseph Dibley. Further investigation needed and a lot of time poring over this gold mine of a cd!

Sue, I thought the CD would be worth its weight in gold for you!
Such a shame it didn't solve my brick wall with Martha Franklin.

I'm still trying to work out the best way to trawl through all the Dibleys! I didn't realise that there would be quite so many....

The good news is that I got the cd player to work on my PC so I don't need to wait for OH's to be free before doing any research:D
